TEST DRIVE & SIMULATION #1

CONTENT WARNINGS: forced scenarios, partial nudity, alcohol use, violence & action scenarios, simulation mindfucking.

▶ 001. ARRIVAL / CAFETERIA.

It happens in the blink of an eye -- a dash of time. You're taken from where you were. What you were doing.. it isn't important anymore, and slowly, you give up to desire your normal life. When you awake, figures are looking down on you from a surgical table.

"Yeah, this one will do; let's take them to the rest," That's all you see before losing consciousness again, only to wake up in a pod with many others.

"Your questions will be answered soon enough as I'm sure you will have many," a female, robotic voice says.

Just then, your pod opens in a dim corridor with many others. Your new life is about to begin... whether you like it or not.

The pods drain their stasis fluid which wakens each Outsider. When Outsiders emerge from their pod in only their undergarments which have been supplied to them and head to a locker room in the medical bay, to find a towel to dry off with, a set of gray loungewear to wear as LILITH makes the final decision in organizing the Outsider to their rightful teams. If a character has any accessibility needs, they will be found here. It's about then they will feel a sharp pain at the back of their eyes, almost like there’s a foreign body lodged on the inside of their head. This pain will subside quickly as their body adapts to the changes, but there will always be a sensation of something being not quite right. That their bodies have been changed forever. They would be correct in thinking that. In the pod, all Outsiders have been surgically fitted with ocular and brain implants that will enable them to communicate with LILITH and the rest of the crew, and feed them the information they require. Almost like a computer screen has been loaded into their brains, they will see a loading screen as the implant completes its download. A questionnaire will then pop up, waiting for their answer. A voice, robotic and feminine, will also read along in their brain for them.

█ █ █ LOADING COMPLETE … BEGIN ORIENTATION …

Name:
Username:
Civilian Identity:
Age:
Species:
Origin:

What is the cruelest thing you have ever done?

The system will give Outsiders one chance to provide a truthful answer and choose their username and civilian identity. Should they refuse to cooperate, the implant will download the answer directly from their brain (and give them a username or civilian name against their will). This questionnaire will then be posted on the network for all to view and reply to. Almost like an ice-breaker, if you will. LILITH wants all their newest recruits to learn about each other!

Outsiders will receive a quick brief about their situation: They will be told that the year is 2277, and they have been taken to Neo Tokyo, one of the last bastions of mankind in a world terrorized by various Kaiju and monsters. Only a third of the population remain, and LILITH has gathered talented people from other dimensions here as a last ditch effort to save humanity. Outsiders are free to continue asking LILITH questions through their implant, but there’s no guarantee they will provide them with a straight answer …

Outsiders will also notice an implant in their dominant wrist. This implant has a barcode in it that will enable them to purchase goods from the local stores in Neo Tokyo. They will receive a starting balance of 10,000 KRYPTOS (about USD 66), which is barely enough for a few good meals, groceries and supplies. They can view their current balance through a hologram window projected by their ocular implant.

Once they leave the medical bay, they’ll be able to grab a quick meal in the cafeteria and mingle with the other Outsiders just waking up. Today’s menu is stewed pork, vegetables, and rice, all packed neatly in a food ration tray. It doesn’t look too appetizing, but this isn’t exactly a thriving economy.

That familiar, robotic voice is heard again:

"Greetings, my name is SYNTHIA and I will be taking care of you today while the rest of the crew is.. tasked with their other duties. Worry not, my children. You are in safe hands. Please enjoy your complimentary meal which LILITH has carefully prepared. You may then head to your quarters are explore our BASE using the map provided. LILITH has been kind of enough to also offer a festive party for you all. You should all be grateful."

▶ 002. THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS.

With no recent seismic activity, LILITH is confident that Neo Tokyo is at a relative calm - that there are no expected Kaiju encounters for at least the next few weeks. This is the perfect timing for a little festivity, to raise the morale of the Outsiders. LILITH wants its recruits to be well, both physically and mentally after all. It’s time to give back! And so, the planning for the first ever LILITH Christmas Party 2277 begins …

Outsiders will be assigned with various tasks to help with the organizing of the Christmas Party. Unfortunately, even if the party is meant for them, they will still be expected to put in effort to make it happen. Duties include:

🎄Making a trip to the local Neo Tokyo KFC to pick up a massive catering order of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, fries, fried chicken sandwiches, fried chicken wraps and fizzy drinks. Outsiders will have to work together to get the food back to the main base while it’s still hot and fresh or risk disappointing everyone.

🎄Festive decorations! Unfortunately, LILITH is providing no help with this, so Outsiders can either buy cheap decorations from the local stores in Neo Tokyo, or get creative with whatever happens to be around. LILITH did provide a holographic tree, at least? They’ve also provided what appear to be sprigs of artificial mistletoe, but that’s the extent of how far they’re helping with decorations.

🎄Entertain each other! LILITH is mostly depending on the alcohol available to provide the entertainment, but there are karaoke machines and microphones for Outsiders to enjoy. A whole catalogue of holiday songs and other popular songs are available. Christmas movies are also available, but they appear to be generated by A.I. so beyond having some stereotypical Christmas-like themes, they might not make the most sense.

🎄Clean up. It’s back to business as usual once the party’s over, and all Outsiders will be expected to take down their decorations and clean up the mess from the party.

The droll work aside, food and alcohol will be provided abundantly at the party, and from the meager rations being served at the cafeteria, it’s easy to guess that this isn’t a common occurrence. Outsiders are welcome to chat, mingle and relax with the time they have before things start to ramp up.

▶ 003. THE PARTY CONTINUES (?).

After everyone’s settled in, those sprigs of mistletoe will light up very briefly, and a code will be transmitted directly into the brain implant of some Outsiders. Those Outsiders will feel a sense of calm or merry that seems to have surfaced from nowhere, and a desire to engage in physical contact - be it a hug, holding hands, or a kiss. The effect will wear off once they have obeyed that subliminal command, and walking away from the party can cancel it as well.

What’s that about? Well, LILITH might be testing some new persuasive technology …

"Hey, man, sorry I wasn't around to see your welcoming party! I was too busy █ █ █ing, but I'm back now! My name is Seok Dang. I heard you guys will be simulation training with me today! Try not to get killed! .... Haha, I'm just playing. That can't really happen. I don't think.. Anyway, I'll go easy on ya this time."

▶ 004. SIMULATION #1.

At different times during the week, Outsiders will be summoned into the simulation room and instructed to don their LILITH-issued plugsuits. They will then be paired or grouped up to conduct a battle simulation. After being ushered into the training grounds, the room will turn pitch dark, and a briefing sheet will be projected from their eye implant.

They will be able to access the briefing sheet at any time during the simulation by simply asking to see it. After each Outsider has read the mission brief, the simulation will begin, and they will find themselves right in the middle of Paris, the city and capital of France. The city looks to be under siege with Kaedan running amok. Though they aren’t fast creatures, their numbers alone are enough to put a large part of the city in ruin; with several buildings falling apart from being doused in acid, fires breaking out from vehicles crashing in the frenzy, and people in all states of suffering and devastation (some burning from the flames and acid, others screaming as they are eaten alive). Those familiar with the city might notice many landmarks of note (the Eiffel tower and the Louvre, for example). Sightseeing is possible in these landmarks as they were coded to be quite accurate to reality, if you ignore the screaming and monsters around you. There are residential buildings, shops and government buildings as well, but less attention was paid to their coding, with many apartments looking quite similar on the inside. VR isn’t perfect, so there might be some funny glitches occurring as well (like NPCs being stuck to a wall or eating their shoe like it’s pasta).

Outsiders will encounter many different rescue and kill scenarios, many of them testing their physical strength, their tactical knowledge and their morality. (We will leave this to players to make up for themselves.) Within the simulation, pain feels very much ‘real’, as do every other sight, sound and sensation, and Outsiders leave the simulation and find themselves in the break room if they are ‘killed’ during it. Outsiders who refuse to participate will be heavily encouraged to do so. They might find the monsters particularly interested in hunting and eating them or they might see a familiar face or voice within the crowd of cowering civilians.

At the end of the simulation, everyone’s score is laid out above their heads in a hologram for all to see. Somehow ended up with negative rescue points from killing more people than you save? Well, you might have some explaining to do.

█ █ █ MONSTER DEBRIEF SHEET:
NAME: Kaendan
HEIGHT: 2 m
WEIGHT: 90kg
CLASS: Gastropoda, Omnivorous (eating plant and animal matter, including humans)
THREAT LEVEL: EASY when cornered alone, INTERMEDIATE when in numbers.
LOCATION: Paris, France (Simulation)
ABILITIES: Acidic slime, which can spit out from its mouth. Use of slime to climb most surfaces. Can surround itself in a cocoon of acid. Teeth contain poison. Body is rubbery, so it can withstand some punching.
WEAKNESS: Heat, salt, dissection. Must be near water source to make all that slime.
EXTRA NOTES: Will use the slime to digest its victims and then eats them once they are melted.

█ █ █ MISSION OBJECTIVE:
✖ Complete destruction of the invasive Kaendan colony before it destroys the city and its civilians.
✖ Rescue of civilian lives
✖ Organize safe and orderly evacuation of civilians to the designated emergency shelters
✖ Protection of safe zone from Kaendan
✖ Preservation of infrastructure, with special attention to government buildings and historic monuments
EXTRA NOTES: Each Kaendan killed equates 1 KILL POINT, and each civilian rescued equates 1 RESCUE POINT. Killing civilians, whether on purpose or by accident, results in rescue points being subtracted. Every Outsider’s score will be tallied up after the simulation ends.

[conversely, bakugou finds it almost strange how lackadaisical the other boy is being. there's a difference between being tired and then just dragging yourself along like a slug on two feet. he wonders if that's how this guy normally approaches things, with a big "dun care" attitude. which then makes him wonder what the fuck lilith saw in him to haul his ass in. at least show some fucking emotion and make it apparent whether you're fine with this or if you ha-

oh.]

Che.

[he can't tell if that was mimicry or deliberate. whatever. bakugou kicks his soaking boxerbriefs up and catches them in one hand with an irritable swipe. then aggressively wrings the damn things out as if they're the people who captured him in the first place. the stasis fluid is more oozy and slick than water, so he holds them at full arm's length to avoid getting too splattered around the ankles and feet. he's got his own loungewear tucked atop the lockers near him, found and recovered before he started drying off. well, at least he dried his hands off before picking the clothes up.

likewise, he found their "matches you perfectly" aspect unnerving. either because someone measured him or they got the clothes prepared very quickly. bakugou happens to notice denji nonchalantly kicking his underwear somewhere else and pulls a face at the action. should he tell him he might want to keep those, just in case this is a "one and done" deal? they are prisoners after all...

nope.]

Urusei. There's no "we" here, idiot. Do what you fucking want.

Huh? I thought we were partners ...

[ he then leans his head all the way back, so he can peer toward the young hero from behind the lockers; genuinely a bit surprised by it. alright, maybe he didn't pay good attention to every single detail but are they supposed to serve their new roles on their own completely? even back when he used to work as a devil hunter, they always had a team assigned together. he assumed since they came out at the same time— just maybe they are ...

well, maybe not.

he steps out a few seconds later; modest and proper in his new prison outfit. it was stupid, but denji didn't bother to think ahead since he assumed someone else would carry that burden for him, an unfortunate partner who had to lead the way and make his life easier. however, that's no longer the case. the other blond will exit that door and take care of himself, leaving denji behind with plenty of unanswered questions. it finally settles in, and he starts to feel the true weight of their circumstances.

the party is no longer a priority now. ]

What am I supposed to do tomorrow?

[ bakugou is the only individual he can ask right now. whoever is lingering in the lockers didn't seem to be in the mood to engage with either of them, and they soon vacate this space— leaving the half-devil and the hero all alone. it's subtle, even behind those dull features, but denji is taking it to heart, and is asking for some guidance. ]

I'll grab a meal, maybe go to the party, and then I don't know what else to do ...

Where the hell did you get that idea?

[there had been some mention of missions, which didn't sound at all like solo missions, hence suggesting there'll be partnering up later on. but that seems more akin to a group of soldiers going rather than some two-man cell getting slapped an assignment. not that he can say one way or the other... he notes the peering eyes and shoots a glare towards denji, as if reprimanding him for thinking he could jump the gun.]

They're probably going to assignment groups later. Right now, it's a fucking orientation and mass gathering.

[now completely dry, he can pull on the clothes he stashed away above, only tugging the towel off his hips once the lounge pants are around his waist. shirt next, pulled over his head and down his arms and torso to fall around his waist. good, it's not some annoyingly-clingy sci-fi bodysuit crap.

but he's not leaving, instead giving his underwear another wring out to make sure it's as anti-slick as possible, then folding it and a towel together to shove back into the locker for later retrieval. it momentarily reminds him of the lockers at u.a., within the names and personal effects. the question floating next to him has such a weirdly hollow, floating tone, bakugo's left wondering if the other blonde is possibly stoned right now. likely not... just really shellshook.

he clicks his tongue, but stays.]

Stop worrying about tomorrow, idiot. You've got today to get through. [he closes the locker with a clang and locks it, memorizing the combination before giving it a spin.] C'mon. You need food.

[and he doubts this guy knows the way to the cafeteria.]

[ bakugou's care for a mere underwear is a wild scene to observe. shouldn't he just get rid of that thing instead of safekeeping it for another day? isn't it damaged beyond repair? this should give denji an inkling of what kind of person that hero is, but all he could think about is: a) shit is getting real now. b) what kinda of free meal awaits him? and, c) bakugou has a unique figure for a male. that's something he will think about later— happy to dismiss it for the sake of taming his growing anxieties.

upon hearing the invite, denji didn't allow the brief moment of surprise to hold him back, and he found himself shadowing the other at ease as they left the lockers area. no questions asked, no teasing— he just accepts it. with bakugou taking the lead, he can relax, just enough to alter his attention to their surroundings; taking in the details of their new abode. the interior and technology are nothing like back home, and even someone as simpleminded as denji can tell this is some futuristic shit. fucking hell, he barely learned how to read and write— now he has to adapt to some alien systems too? fuck.

the cafeteria is no five-star dining experience. the food for those who have fancy tastebuds might feel encouraged to nitpick over the quality, but not denji. he seemed content with it; happily digging into the pork and leaving the veggies for last. he takes one big bite after another, chin resting on his hand and idly staring at the rusty walls and flicking lights in each corner.

he digs through his plate again, rounding up another mouthful as he casually muttered: ]

Hmm, I guess we should introduce ourselves. I've been told it's rude not to do it ... [ one of the few lessons aki left behind. it also involved a handshake but he'll skip that part. ] My name is Denji. I'm 17 years old. No wait, I guess I'm 18 by now ... my hobbies are sleeping and eating.

[ there. maturity! ]

[it's good underwear! there's nothing damaged about it! it'd be a real shit take to kidnap a bunch of people and then shove them into rags while explaining they were here to fight for their new captors. like some fucked up gladiatorial ring. bakugou isn't wasteful and he can grasp situations quickly. which likewise gives him a rough idea of what kind of person this sharp-toothed exhausted guy is. still, he's the only one the young hero's talked to so far (outside of roughing up the npc earlier) so that's a point in his favor...

bakugou heads out of the lockers, hands in his pockets and eyes forward as his shoulders round in a way that radiates "fuck off" vibes to anyone else that wants to sidle up to him and waste his time with stupid questions. he's not dull to the area around them either, having been taking note of the futuristic tech and mixture of defensive, slapdash, and stronghold all in one. it still has some similarities to japan, but more of a militaristic version with the trappings of cybernetic enhancements. almost like those sci-fi comics that popped up every now and then amid the superhero stories back home.

for his part, bakugou's critical of the food. not entirely for the quality, but more because it looked like half-assed stew that gave up before it was put together. he opts to move the meat over to the vegetables, add the rice into the stewed liquid, and while that's soaking, give some flavor to the meat and vegetables with salt/pepper. before mixing it all back together in a proper stew-on-rice bowl. tch. they couldn't even do that... everything needed was right there!

denji's the only one who gets to witness it though, since bakugou sits with his back to the rest of the room at the furthest table. he glances up at the introduction. great. just what he wanted... there's a brief second, debating, before-]

[ he watched carefully as bakugou enhanced his cheap meal into a decent flavor and that's when his personality started coming out into perspective. somewhat of a perfectionist, isn't he? the flaring temper might be a turn-off to many, but it's also genuine in a sense that brings a level of comfort. denji can appreciate someone being brutally honest with him over the fake smiles and empty promises; which is refreshing. he honestly would feel like shit if he was grouped with someone being too friendly from the start, so this is fine. whether bakugou will be part of his circle or not is another question that he seemed to forget.

subtly, he— begins to mimic the hero's method, step by step. it would've worked better if he had enough on his plate. instead, denji is toying with his last bite, reaching out for the salt/pepper for an extra kick. ]

You skipped the hobbies part ...

[ denji is starting to understand the pace around here and the idea is to mingle; get to know your future partners or maybe foes. who the fuck knows? everything is oh-so suspicious and they are still blinded to the type of hazards they are forced to deal with. who is the enemy? just a bunch of random monsters attacking the civilians? is it like his gig as a devil hunter? — is he allowed to be chainsaw man here? that is the real question. denji has been deprived for so long, he almost forgot what it feels like to have those chainsaws bust through his skull and flesh.

he regards bakugou from the corner of his eye, somewhat wondering what he had on mind to do on his first day. he could ask— but he can tell the young hero is not a social bee and he'd probably skip the party. ]

[bakugou knows he's going to need to entertain similar thoughts. though his pride says he can handle this on his own, the reality is, there are going to be teams in the future. he'll need to be with people who are useful, not some lame assholes who'll drag him down because they're too weak or they clash. like it or not, he needs to start vetting the other captives and sizing them up. starting with this guy. which isn't the worst take. nothing about him screams powerful, but lilith isn't going to capture a soldier that isn't useful. denji has a sort of calm that's hard to tell if it's easy going or just too damn tired...

but he seems sincere enough, so that's a positive. someone who isn't frazzled by much can be beneficial. don't have to slug them in the face to calm them down when things start getting crazy. and yeah, he notices denji emulating the improvements on his food. would've been more useful if he hadn't shoved down over half of it already...]

I beat the shit outta people who piss me off.

[bakugou isn't about to rattle off personal information just yet. screw if this is an introduction to mingling. they can keep things at a militaristic level until it's needed to go further. he'll have to test out his quirk in a little while and see what's become of it. those blasts earlier against the guard felt a lot weaker than what he'd been doing during the war. chalk it up to the transfer fucking with his quirk... better not last long.]

They can't expect us to stay complacent for long.

... ah.

[ okay. he won’t pry further, hearing that answer loud and clear. while they equally share a lack of distrust for each other and everyone around them, for justified reasons, bakugou comes out as someone who isn’t ready to play the game yet; keen to keep everyone at arm's length. a more terrifying concept is bakugou being genuine instead of snarky, but aside from the verbal jabs— he hasn’t thrashed anyone yet. in fact, he didn’t need to accommodate denji and share a table with him to begin with, but here they are— coexisting. the half-devil is confused by it. when words don’t match one’s actions, offering two perspectives that made it difficult for him to read one's energy. regardless, for someone who’s been lied to so many times, denji grew cynical of kind words from strangers.

all he sees is someone keeping to himself— and that’s not so bad, is it? ]

If they could offer me a good life, I wouldn’t mind it. I think they will reward us in one way or another.

[ they are fighting and risking their life for a bunch of nobodies—surely this lilith knows the team she recruited must be motivated to keep their functions. if not, she made the dumbest mistake bringing in denji; this guy won’t lift a foot unless he’s promised a nice treat for it. satisfied, he pushed the empty plate aside and turned on his seat, facing the other. ]

I’m going to the party. [ it’s not an invite, just a statement. he knows bakugou wouldn’t even humor it. ] What will you do for the rest of the night?

[maybe later, when he's not in a pissed off rage at getting kidnapped, bakugou will be more ready to answer denji's questions with details. right now, the other boy's presence is something tangible to hold onto amid the whirlwind of unknown saturating the presence. there's something about him that seems both calming and needy, but he's kidnapped as well so something must be worth it to grab him. also he's not being threatening or shady, so it's not like he's coming across as a danger. whether his tired state is circumstantial or natural will have to be answered later. bakugou isn't about to get chummy with anyone so readily, but being completely alone right now sucks more than at least having someone tolerable. denji's oddly enough filling that role. no real attempts to ingratiate himself or offer any extra information bakugou doesn't want to deal with.]

You think being conscripted into someone else's fucking army is a good life? [he glances at the other boy with narrowed eyes, taking a few things from that statement.] Tch, the only reward I want is a way back home.

[bakugou forks a piece of meat into his mouth, ruminating on the idea of a reward and/or cooperation with their captors. nothing so far has suggested a negative for not helping. ironically the place seems to be more hopeful and requesting in their operations rather than cracking the whip of a slave owner. but that's not going to sway him just yet...]

Find my room. Fucking ridiculous they want to have a party after kidnapping a bunch of people. [it almost seems like an insulting mockery of the time most people at home came from. winter holidays.] What team are you on?

Man. I wanna say something smart or poetic about this— but it's not a bad life, really. We get rewarded for our talent.

[ that might give bakugou a glimpse of what he's dealing with here. a fucked up mentality that is both indifferent and terrified at the same time; an exhausting imbalance that makes denji the perfect prey to exploit. best part is: he knows it. he's starting to see a pattern and he has no one else to blame but himself. that's when he realized something— bakugou's anger is somewhat admirable. it's how he's supposed to react if he was normal, but denji can't fucking bring it out of him to be mad ... for many reasons. he's too tired to fight. too tired to argue. too tired to question it. so long as he had no one to worry about, or be used as an excuse to manipulate him, denji could find some level of peace in being here. it's freeing, isn't it? being alone ...

he offers bakugou a lopsided smile, bitter but amused that he couldn't match the sentiment of wanting to go back home. shit, that makes him feel like actual garbage. as if abandoning nayuta and his life back home was the only way to get out of being shackled all the time. he didn't know anyone here, he didn't give a fuck about anyone either.

yeah, freedom. ]

Something-light. Can't remember the exact name ... [ yes. he is your partner, after all. he stands up, ready to leave bakugou with this harrowing culmination that they will end up working together in the future. ] If you ever change your mind, a party should be fun.

[personal profile] blastedass 2023-12-12 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
What part of this is a fucking reward?!

[yeah, that says a lot about denji and bakugou's bristling about it. someone who finds the simple amenities welcome enough to be called a "reward" is someone who can be easily swayed. like a young lost boy stumbling around the city in sadness, and the only one who bothers to offer a hand is the most evil villain in society history. what the hell did they think would happen to that boy? someone can be led down a good path or a bad path if they're easily swayed, adrift without a sense of purpose or self enough to claim a path as their own. and if that person happens to be powerful, then their lot in life amounts to be used by people who'd take advantage of it. no, he recognizes something like that in denji with that comment alone and it rankles him.

makes him wonder what kind of home denji has to go back to. perhaps some people captured from home would find this place better than the world they came from. that's not a thought he's really stopped to dwell on, but it's stark front and center right now. tch, well that's their problem. so long as they don't try to sabotage anyone trying to get home. bakugou returns to his food, though figures he'd keep an eye on denji. lilith brought him here for a reason...]

Everlight. [that means denji's on the same assigned team as him. that's... great. a partner right off the fucking bat. he glances up when denji stands. maybe it's not the worst thing, since he already decided to watch him.] You're on the same team as me. [he's not the party type. but denji seems ready to go, so before he leaves-] Watch out for yourself.
