TEST DRIVE & SIMULATION #1

CONTENT WARNINGS: forced scenarios, partial nudity, alcohol use, violence & action scenarios, simulation mindfucking.

▶ 001. ARRIVAL / CAFETERIA.

It happens in the blink of an eye -- a dash of time. You're taken from where you were. What you were doing.. it isn't important anymore, and slowly, you give up to desire your normal life. When you awake, figures are looking down on you from a surgical table.

"Yeah, this one will do; let's take them to the rest," That's all you see before losing consciousness again, only to wake up in a pod with many others.

"Your questions will be answered soon enough as I'm sure you will have many," a female, robotic voice says.

Just then, your pod opens in a dim corridor with many others. Your new life is about to begin... whether you like it or not.

The pods drain their stasis fluid which wakens each Outsider. When Outsiders emerge from their pod in only their undergarments which have been supplied to them and head to a locker room in the medical bay, to find a towel to dry off with, a set of gray loungewear to wear as LILITH makes the final decision in organizing the Outsider to their rightful teams. If a character has any accessibility needs, they will be found here. It's about then they will feel a sharp pain at the back of their eyes, almost like there’s a foreign body lodged on the inside of their head. This pain will subside quickly as their body adapts to the changes, but there will always be a sensation of something being not quite right. That their bodies have been changed forever. They would be correct in thinking that. In the pod, all Outsiders have been surgically fitted with ocular and brain implants that will enable them to communicate with LILITH and the rest of the crew, and feed them the information they require. Almost like a computer screen has been loaded into their brains, they will see a loading screen as the implant completes its download. A questionnaire will then pop up, waiting for their answer. A voice, robotic and feminine, will also read along in their brain for them.

█ █ █ LOADING COMPLETE … BEGIN ORIENTATION …

Name:
Username:
Civilian Identity:
Age:
Species:
Origin:

What is the cruelest thing you have ever done?

The system will give Outsiders one chance to provide a truthful answer and choose their username and civilian identity. Should they refuse to cooperate, the implant will download the answer directly from their brain (and give them a username or civilian name against their will). This questionnaire will then be posted on the network for all to view and reply to. Almost like an ice-breaker, if you will. LILITH wants all their newest recruits to learn about each other!

Outsiders will receive a quick brief about their situation: They will be told that the year is 2277, and they have been taken to Neo Tokyo, one of the last bastions of mankind in a world terrorized by various Kaiju and monsters. Only a third of the population remain, and LILITH has gathered talented people from other dimensions here as a last ditch effort to save humanity. Outsiders are free to continue asking LILITH questions through their implant, but there’s no guarantee they will provide them with a straight answer …

Outsiders will also notice an implant in their dominant wrist. This implant has a barcode in it that will enable them to purchase goods from the local stores in Neo Tokyo. They will receive a starting balance of 10,000 KRYPTOS (about USD 66), which is barely enough for a few good meals, groceries and supplies. They can view their current balance through a hologram window projected by their ocular implant.

Once they leave the medical bay, they’ll be able to grab a quick meal in the cafeteria and mingle with the other Outsiders just waking up. Today’s menu is stewed pork, vegetables, and rice, all packed neatly in a food ration tray. It doesn’t look too appetizing, but this isn’t exactly a thriving economy.

That familiar, robotic voice is heard again:

"Greetings, my name is SYNTHIA and I will be taking care of you today while the rest of the crew is.. tasked with their other duties. Worry not, my children. You are in safe hands. Please enjoy your complimentary meal which LILITH has carefully prepared. You may then head to your quarters are explore our BASE using the map provided. LILITH has been kind of enough to also offer a festive party for you all. You should all be grateful."

▶ 002. THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS.

With no recent seismic activity, LILITH is confident that Neo Tokyo is at a relative calm - that there are no expected Kaiju encounters for at least the next few weeks. This is the perfect timing for a little festivity, to raise the morale of the Outsiders. LILITH wants its recruits to be well, both physically and mentally after all. It’s time to give back! And so, the planning for the first ever LILITH Christmas Party 2277 begins …

Outsiders will be assigned with various tasks to help with the organizing of the Christmas Party. Unfortunately, even if the party is meant for them, they will still be expected to put in effort to make it happen. Duties include:

🎄Making a trip to the local Neo Tokyo KFC to pick up a massive catering order of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, fries, fried chicken sandwiches, fried chicken wraps and fizzy drinks. Outsiders will have to work together to get the food back to the main base while it’s still hot and fresh or risk disappointing everyone.

🎄Festive decorations! Unfortunately, LILITH is providing no help with this, so Outsiders can either buy cheap decorations from the local stores in Neo Tokyo, or get creative with whatever happens to be around. LILITH did provide a holographic tree, at least? They’ve also provided what appear to be sprigs of artificial mistletoe, but that’s the extent of how far they’re helping with decorations.

🎄Entertain each other! LILITH is mostly depending on the alcohol available to provide the entertainment, but there are karaoke machines and microphones for Outsiders to enjoy. A whole catalogue of holiday songs and other popular songs are available. Christmas movies are also available, but they appear to be generated by A.I. so beyond having some stereotypical Christmas-like themes, they might not make the most sense.

🎄Clean up. It’s back to business as usual once the party’s over, and all Outsiders will be expected to take down their decorations and clean up the mess from the party.

The droll work aside, food and alcohol will be provided abundantly at the party, and from the meager rations being served at the cafeteria, it’s easy to guess that this isn’t a common occurrence. Outsiders are welcome to chat, mingle and relax with the time they have before things start to ramp up.

▶ 003. THE PARTY CONTINUES (?).

After everyone’s settled in, those sprigs of mistletoe will light up very briefly, and a code will be transmitted directly into the brain implant of some Outsiders. Those Outsiders will feel a sense of calm or merry that seems to have surfaced from nowhere, and a desire to engage in physical contact - be it a hug, holding hands, or a kiss. The effect will wear off once they have obeyed that subliminal command, and walking away from the party can cancel it as well.

What’s that about? Well, LILITH might be testing some new persuasive technology …

"Hey, man, sorry I wasn't around to see your welcoming party! I was too busy █ █ █ing, but I'm back now! My name is Seok Dang. I heard you guys will be simulation training with me today! Try not to get killed! .... Haha, I'm just playing. That can't really happen. I don't think.. Anyway, I'll go easy on ya this time."

▶ 004. SIMULATION #1.

At different times during the week, Outsiders will be summoned into the simulation room and instructed to don their LILITH-issued plugsuits. They will then be paired or grouped up to conduct a battle simulation. After being ushered into the training grounds, the room will turn pitch dark, and a briefing sheet will be projected from their eye implant.

They will be able to access the briefing sheet at any time during the simulation by simply asking to see it. After each Outsider has read the mission brief, the simulation will begin, and they will find themselves right in the middle of Paris, the city and capital of France. The city looks to be under siege with Kaedan running amok. Though they aren’t fast creatures, their numbers alone are enough to put a large part of the city in ruin; with several buildings falling apart from being doused in acid, fires breaking out from vehicles crashing in the frenzy, and people in all states of suffering and devastation (some burning from the flames and acid, others screaming as they are eaten alive). Those familiar with the city might notice many landmarks of note (the Eiffel tower and the Louvre, for example). Sightseeing is possible in these landmarks as they were coded to be quite accurate to reality, if you ignore the screaming and monsters around you. There are residential buildings, shops and government buildings as well, but less attention was paid to their coding, with many apartments looking quite similar on the inside. VR isn’t perfect, so there might be some funny glitches occurring as well (like NPCs being stuck to a wall or eating their shoe like it’s pasta).

Outsiders will encounter many different rescue and kill scenarios, many of them testing their physical strength, their tactical knowledge and their morality. (We will leave this to players to make up for themselves.) Within the simulation, pain feels very much ‘real’, as do every other sight, sound and sensation, and Outsiders leave the simulation and find themselves in the break room if they are ‘killed’ during it. Outsiders who refuse to participate will be heavily encouraged to do so. They might find the monsters particularly interested in hunting and eating them or they might see a familiar face or voice within the crowd of cowering civilians.

At the end of the simulation, everyone’s score is laid out above their heads in a hologram for all to see. Somehow ended up with negative rescue points from killing more people than you save? Well, you might have some explaining to do.

█ █ █ MONSTER DEBRIEF SHEET:
NAME: Kaendan
HEIGHT: 2 m
WEIGHT: 90kg
CLASS: Gastropoda, Omnivorous (eating plant and animal matter, including humans)
THREAT LEVEL: EASY when cornered alone, INTERMEDIATE when in numbers.
LOCATION: Paris, France (Simulation)
ABILITIES: Acidic slime, which can spit out from its mouth. Use of slime to climb most surfaces. Can surround itself in a cocoon of acid. Teeth contain poison. Body is rubbery, so it can withstand some punching.
WEAKNESS: Heat, salt, dissection. Must be near water source to make all that slime.
EXTRA NOTES: Will use the slime to digest its victims and then eats them once they are melted.

█ █ █ MISSION OBJECTIVE:
✖ Complete destruction of the invasive Kaendan colony before it destroys the city and its civilians.
✖ Rescue of civilian lives
✖ Organize safe and orderly evacuation of civilians to the designated emergency shelters
✖ Protection of safe zone from Kaendan
✖ Preservation of infrastructure, with special attention to government buildings and historic monuments
EXTRA NOTES: Each Kaendan killed equates 1 KILL POINT, and each civilian rescued equates 1 RESCUE POINT. Killing civilians, whether on purpose or by accident, results in rescue points being subtracted. Every Outsider’s score will be tallied up after the simulation ends.

( the festivities get too much, at one point, and wanderer finds peace in the outskirts of the city. there's hardly many people around, none that bother to make conversation with him, and it's not loud, per say — not with the voice and chit-chatter of people. because fate is never truly kind to him, for whatever reason several stray cats start pretty much yelling at him, as though they could... what? smell food on him? does he look like he even needs to eat?

all of his attempts to send them away doesn't work. he tells them he doesn't have food several times — nothing. he flies ahead of them — they catch up, eventually. when he stops walking, they rub themselves against his legs. really? fine. if he feeds them, he would leave him alone.

(a man's last words before he adopts half the city's cat population)

this is when, in the distance, he spots someone feeding them... or making a valiant attempt. they're not as amicable to him as they are to wanderer, and he can spot the faint scratch marks on his hands. are cats this stupid, to harm someone who looks good-natured, but cling desperately to someone like him?

the only thing that really announces him walking closer is the cats yelling, and wanderer doesn't really spare jing yuan a look as he crouches next to him and holds a hand out. the kitten doesn't leave him, despite wanderer's presence there. at least that one will be loyal. isn't that fun. )

Give me some of the food you have. They won't leave me alone.

[ jing yuan notices his presence before the cats announce his presence, meowing loudly to catch his attention. almost immediately, he finds himself surrounded by felines, each one seemingly attracted to the younger male now crouched next to him. he doesn't look quite pleased with this shower of affection either, his expression petulant and exasperated.

the kitten nudging jing yuan's hand also looks perturbed, shifting closer to his touch as if avoiding the rest.
]

Haha, one cat leads to another.

[ is he implying that Wan-chan is a cat? nope. instead, he's offering him a piece of bread he's stowed away from the base. ]

Tear it and give it to them piece by piece, though feeding will only encourage them to follow you more.
skirm: commissioned, please don't take (pic#16671921)

[personal profile] skirm 2023-12-01 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
( what the fuck does that even mean. old man hallucinating cat ears on him? disgusting.

he takes the bread, nonetheless. it's not surprising that the likelihood of the cats following him more would increase nearly drastically if he feeds them. wouldn't anyone, cat or not? when a kind hand reaches out to care for you, when they give a roof under your head and food to keep you fed, wouldn't you stay with them?

piece by piece, wanderer feeds each of the cats. at least they're polite to wait, and not jump over each other for food. )

I have my ways to keep them away if they insist in following me still. But at least with this they will be quiet.

( and if there's a contradiction as to why he didn't use this mysterious solution to fend off the cats before, well... don't worry about it. )
eepy: (pic#16606730)

[personal profile] eepy 2023-12-02 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[ jing yuan can only guess that these cats also find food elsewhere, otherwise they'd be jumping all over him as he starts feeding them. or perhaps it's this little one that gets them to behave well enough to be fed.

his own kitten, however, has gotten a bit more demanding of his momentarily distracted attention, hopping to bite at the bread hanging from jing yuan's fingers.
]

Ah, so you've yet to employ your "ways", seeing as they're still following you.

[ he chuckles goodnaturedly. ] What did you do to endear them so much towards you?
skirm: (pic#16671879)

[personal profile] skirm 2023-12-02 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
( he shoots a look at the other man that clearly says don't bring it up again, because he can tell his contradiction was caught on, but wanderer lets it rest. what he does or does not do to the cats is his business and no one else's. )

Nothing. They just started following me. ( there's a few guesses to be waged. animals are simplistic creatures, and are more likely to tell the good-natured people from the bad.

due to his nature as a puppet, maybe he's an exception, or maybe he can hide his sins and instincts better than humans. perhaps it's their lack of rational intelligence that keeps drawing them to him. )

Maybe I smell like food, from the party. ( and because he's allergic to being always sincere, unfortunately: ) Or maybe someone has been bothering them so much they had to find someone else to feed them. Animals are more likely to attack someone if they feel threatened.

( so what are those scratches about, huh. )
eepy: (pic#16606719)

[personal profile] eepy 2023-12-02 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[ does he look bothered by the implied accusation? nope, not at all.

in fact, all it does is encourage jing yuan to continue to feed his own kitten, attracting the attention of a few other cats that belonged to the other group. a couple of them soon wander in his direction, sniffing at the rest of the bread he's been holding in his other hand.
]

Or perhaps they sense a kindred spirit in the person that's following them.

[ he certainly has the personality of a cat, one that hisses at strangers and its owner alike while unable to leave them alone. his kitten meows as if in concurrence. ]

Cats are quite intelligent creatures, after all.
skirm: commissioned, please don't take (pic#16671901)

[personal profile] skirm 2023-12-03 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
( again, whatever that means. that he's about as intelligent as a cat? funny. can an animal even be intelligent at all, or is it measured by their instincts? a lion wouldn't have coddled up to them. a stray cat — not quite domestic, but not wild either — is completely oblivious to the real threat between the two men.

... or maybe, at the end of the day, they're right. it's not like wanderer would do anything to them, no matter how much blood is on his hands, or how many sins he carries on his back. )

What does that say about you, then?

( the one with scratches on his hands. maybe they do know something. )
eepy: (pic#16674743)

[personal profile] eepy 2023-12-03 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
[ what indeed does that say about him? perhaps more than he'd like. but it says more about the boy next to him than anything else.

jing yuan hums, chuckling when the kitten playfully nips his fingers. the attention he gives her is far too little. he gives her a scratch behind the ears before he tears off more of the bread and scatters it before her, gently coaxing the other cats away.
]

I suppose that speaks about my interloper self, full of bread as bribes in exchange for unwanted pets and belly rubs.

[ and some cats don't like that. ]
skirm: (pic#16858762)

[personal profile] skirm 2023-12-03 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
( some cats indeed don't like that. he wouldn't like it either — not that he's a cat, of course, but that kind of thing can be applied to anyone. if he cared any more about any of this, wanderer would almost think of it as blackmail, but cats don't care about that, so neither should he.

ironically, he stands on the far end of that conundrum: offering bread to the cats who still meow at him, and who find purchase to rub their fluffy, light bodies against his hands and legs. cats are too fragile for his liking. )

And is it worth it, being disliked by them? They'll take your food out of necessity, but they will grow not to trust you.

( that's usually how it goes. from experience. he eyes, especially, the kitten. young, naive, and oblivious to life. )
eepy: (pic#16606750)

[personal profile] eepy 2023-12-03 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[ he watches as the cats around him continue to shower him with affection: the meowing, the headbutting, their tails wrapping around his ankles. for all of his harsh words, it's clear that the cats see kindness in him that he can't seem to see. ]

Haha, I don't need them to trust me. Seeing them fed like this before they return to where they came from is more than enough.

[ these creatures, feral and growing far away from humans, will always be slow to trust. but even animals like them still seek attention and food from those who would give them. ]

There will always be tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that.

[ besides, despite the scratches he's received, they haven't entirely left yet and continue to eat the bread. that's already an improvement. ]
skirm: (pic#16671941)

[personal profile] skirm 2023-12-03 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
( what a simpleton.

wanderer looks away, as though that had personally annoyed him. acts of kindness without an ulterior purpose is not something easy for him to understand. what reason is there, feeding animals without expecting anything back? who in their right mind would waste away food and time and their own health to feed something that won't reciprocate that kindness and care? what is the point of any of this? )

Hmph. Maybe they are intelligent. Who would trust someone who keeps offering without expecting anything back?

( isn't it easier to just be honest with one's intentions? doesn't that build trust, or at least mutual acknowledgment? does it make sense, then, that it's the youngest cat who blindly trusts without being suspicious of one's intentions?

how annoying. )

There will be a day where they won't come back. They can only fall for your blind trust so many times.
eepy: (pic#16606796)

[personal profile] eepy 2023-12-03 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[ did nahida not give you enough hugs, sir???

jing yuan simply chuckles. he supposes that it's human nature to expect everything to be a transaction, to receive something in return for the effort they've done or the kindness that they gave. it's understandable; giving is exhausting, and it won't be long before one exhausts themselves while giving.

he tilts his head, peering at the younger male next to him. reluctance and petulance is written all over his face, and yet, his hands do not stop tearing the bread apart and spreading them to the cats.
]

What is your reason for offering them food? Surely, not an expectation that they'll simply stop following you, is it?

[ because if so, what he's doing is counterproductive. ]
skirm: commissioned, please don't take (pic#16671885)

[personal profile] skirm 2023-12-03 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
( does he look like he'd allow her to hug him???

as it goes with words that call out to his contradictions, wanderer shoots a look at the other that is none too pleasant. tread it caution, his gaze reads, but he eventually allows it to fall back on the felines. )

Isn't that obvious? ( no, if his actions are anything to go by, but the truth behind them don't belong to anyone's eyes. ) Their yelling is annoying, and I don't want them following me. They will shut up and mind their business if I feed them. They know what I want, and I know what they want. That's how everything is supposed to be.

( that's how he believes relationships are supposed to be, but in the back of his mind, he could almost hear nahida telling him that his belief is wrong and flawed to a fault. good thing she isn't around, at least. he doesn't need to be told how life works when he has lived and seen so much. )
eepy: (pic#16674730)

[personal profile] eepy 2023-12-03 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[ he allowed her to send him to school, so.

he's full of contradictions, isn't he? though his words and the way he speaks imply something deeper, something heavier than a boy his age would speak of. still, jing yuan laughs, just as he offers the last piece of bread to his kitten.
]

Haha, is that so?

[ to believe that the cats would leave and stop meowing after giving them food? he would've been better off shooing them away than feeding them if that's the outcome he's looking forward to. ]

And if they continue to refuse to leave you be, will you finally employ your "ways" of dismissing them?
skirm: commissioned, please don't take (pic#16671911)

[personal profile] skirm 2023-12-03 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
( if he goes to school he'll be away from her, which is a win, so.

ugh. wanderer clicks his tongue, annoyed. he can tell this guy isn't taking his words seriously, knows that he can tell wanderer doesn't mean them. the assumption of his character is infuriating, even if he might be right. no, he's not feeding them in hopes they will leave him alone — he's feeding them because they're weak, and in need of help, and haven't done anything wrong... to him, or anyone. no, he won't employ his ways of dismissing them if they keep following him — though he might be annoyed, it's far more likely that wanderer will just accept their company, as long as they don't yell into his ears.

he doesn't mind when birds perch on his shoulders or hat. he wouldn't mind if cats just follow him and lean on him, either. but who needs to know any of that, aside from himself? )

Why are you so interested on what I do or do not do to them? If you're so worried I'll hurt them, keep them for yourself.

( that would save him the trouble anyways!!! )
eepy: (pic#16606768)

[personal profile] eepy 2023-12-03 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[ sure ..........................................

jing yuan can very well see now why the strays have found themselves attached to him. his personality is very much like a cat: from the way he presents himself to the way he "hisses" at the slightest callout of his contradictions. it's almost amusing to watch, and a part of him anticipates a tail suddenly flicking from behind him.

another chuckle, as he affectionately brushes his kitten's head with the back of his fingers. she meows softly, nuzzling back.
]

I'd take them, but it seems they've already chosen who they wish to remain with.

[ and he wouldn't dare part them from their favorite human. ]

I'm afraid I'll have to concede.
