▶ 007. TEST DRIVE & SIMULATION #7

TDM & SIMULATION #7

CONTENT WARNINGS: ptsd, ptsd (of children), bloodletting, medical needles, survival-horror elements, vampirism, partial nudity

▶ 001. ARRIVAL / CAFETERIA.

It happens in the blink of an eye, a dash of time – you're taken from where you were. What you were doing... it isn't important anymore, and slowly, you give up the desire of your normal life. When you awaken, figures are looking down on you from a surgical table.

"Yeah, this one will do; let's take them to the rest." That's all you see before losing consciousness again, only to wake up in a pod with many others.

"Your questions will be answered soon enough, as I'm sure you will have many," a female, robotic voice says.

Just then, your pod opens in a dim corridor with many others. Your new life is about to begin... whether you like it or not.

The pods drain their stasis fluid which wakes each Outsider. Outsiders emerge from their pod in only their undergarments which have been supplied to them, and head to a locker room in the medical bay to find a towel to dry off with and a set of gray loungewear to wear as LILITH makes the final decision in assigning the Outsiders to their rightful teams. If a character has any accessibility needs, they will be found here. It's about then they will feel a sharp pain at the back of their eyes, almost like there’s a foreign body lodged on the inside of their head. This pain will subside quickly as their body adapts to the changes, but there will always be a sensation of something being not quite right; that their bodies have been changed forever. They would be correct in thinking that. In the pod, all Outsiders have been surgically fitted with ocular and brain implants that will enable them to communicate with LILITH and the rest of the crew, as well as providing them the information they require. Almost like a computer screen has been loaded into their brains, they will see a loading screen as the implant completes its download. A questionnaire will then pop up, waiting for their answer. A voice, robotic and feminine, will also read along in their brain for them.

█ █ █ LOADING COMPLETE … BEGIN ORIENTATION …

Name:
Username:
Civilian Identity:
Age:
Species:
Origin:
Blood Type:

Do you believe in ghosts?

The system will give Outsiders one chance to provide a truthful answer and choose their username and civilian identity. Should they refuse to cooperate, the implant will download the answer directly from their brain (and give them a username or civilian name against their will). This questionnaire will then be posted on the network for all to view and reply to. Almost like an ice-breaker, if you will. LILITH wants all their newest recruits to learn about each other!

Outsiders will receive a quick brief about their situation: they will be told that the year is 2278 and they have been taken to Neo Tokyo, one of the last bastions of mankind in a world terrorized by various Kaiju and monsters. Only a third of the population remains, and LILITH has gathered talented people from other dimensions here as a last ditch effort to save humanity. Outsiders are free to continue asking LILITH questions through their implant, but there’s no guarantee that they will provide them with a straight answer …

Outsiders will also notice an implant in their dominant wrist. This implant has a barcode in it that will enable them to purchase goods from the local stores in Neo Tokyo. They will receive a starting balance of 15,000,000 KRYPTOS (about USD 100), which is barely enough for a few good meals, groceries, and supplies. They can view their current balance through a hologram window projected by their ocular implant.

While there would normally be a meal available for them in the cafeteria, this doesn’t seem to be the case this time. Robots working within the cafeteria will instead be handing out a small array of food: blood sausages, blood soup, pumpkin curry, candy corn, and iron pills to each Outsider. The blood for the sausages and soup are supposedly from donations and whatever was left from the medical bay. There will be enough iron pills for people to distribute amongst their teammates if needed, as well as other supplements.

That familiar robotic voice is heard again:

"Greetings, my name is SYNTHIA and I will be taking care of you today while the rest of the crew is occupied. Worry not, my children. You are in safe hands."

▶ 002. SIMULATION.

Outsiders are provided sufficient downtime after the last optional mission. Additionally, LILITH will still be offering the same services as the aftermath of the previous battle, including the usual medical assistance and therapy. Those who have lost body parts will be provided a synthetic replacement when they are ready. This replacement will function just like the body part that is lost and can look way cooler (up to you) or blend in with a character's natural body (also up to you.) Refer to our rewards page for more information. Characters will receive a replacement prosthetic (e.g. the basic prosthetic arm/leg/eye) but will need to put in a reward request to further enhance their prosthetic (e.g. to buy a machine gun for their prosthetic arm).

Just because LILITH provides therapy, doesn't mean a character has to go, but the option is there. Outsiders may also be encouraged to visit these facilities, depending on their general mood, which occasionally seems tracked through their oculars. Team members will also be incentivized to reach out to one another to check in and provide some much needed emotional and/or physical support.

While not required, LILITH will still resume its usual simulation training, and those who desire to participate will be asked to arrive at the simulation in varying intervals in their LILITH-issued plugsuits. The design of this simulation will be a bit different and will take on the form of a horror and/or survival game: participating Outsiders will be expected to complete puzzles and make it through various levels of difficulty in order to complete the simulation.

Each Outsider will open their eyes to what appears to be an abandoned town. The town almost appears to be colorless in many ways and is covered in a light fog. The simulation will provide various objectives that range from protecting a single civilian or child found in the midst of this town, to defeating several monsters. The monsters will be reminiscent of any monster the Outsiders have already seen before, the only exception being the “final boss.” During the final boss fight, Outsiders are encouraged to give it their all and push their abilities in order for LILITH to be able to better gauge everyone’s abilities and growth.

Besides, it wouldn’t be considered an actual simulation without a proper battle.

█ █ █ MONSTER DEBRIEF SHEET:
NAME: TRIANGLE HEAD
HEIGHT: 3 METERS
WEIGHT: 300 KG
CLASS: UNKNOWN, CANNOT BE CLASSED.
THREAT LEVEL: MODERATE-SEVERE
LOCATION: Unnamed City, USA
ABILITIES: Able to appear from people’s shadows, able to instill a sense of fear in others. Wields a sword, which it also utilizes as a long ranged weapon.
WEAKNESS: Susceptible to the emotions of the other party. The more acceptance they have in their hearts, the less powerful it becomes.
EXTRA NOTES: Once it is able to instill fear on its target, it is able to cast illusions. These illusions can differ from person to person, but seems to make them confront their biggest fears.

█ █ █ MISSION OBJECTIVE:
✖ Identify any living civilians and take them to safety bunker while fighting off monsters.
✖ Take out all monsters and/or kaiju that are in the area.
✖ Protect safe zones.
✖ Defeat TRIANGLE HEAD.
EXTRA NOTES: Assisting other Outsiders and working together also increases the overall score.

█ █ █ ATTACHED PHOTO:

At the end of the simulation, they will be rewarded with a little pin that says: “I’ve survived ☺” with either a cat, ghost, or witch on it. Outsiders may challenge this as many times as they would like. Unfortunately, as this “horror simulation” hinged deeply on the subconscious, some will find that after the simulation is complete, they may have residual fear left in their bodies that trigger at random times. Whether this be when they’re going to the bathroom at 2 AM, or they’re in the middle of the cafeteria grabbing a late snack. They may also have the feeling that they hear monsters lingering around base, and be struck with the sudden fear that they’re being followed.

While LILITH will rework everyone’s oculars in order to deal with this problem, in the meantime, they suggest watching heartwarming videos and shows. LILITH will have a library of suggestions, including old Christmas movies, cartoons, and even old episodes of reality TV to act as an appropriate distraction. Maybe arrange a comforting sleepover party?

▶ 003. THIS IS HALLOWEEN.

Outsiders who choose to venture out into Neo Tokyo will find the city bustling with life, just as it always is. Halloween has always been a holiday well loved and celebrated in Neo Tokyo, and not even the very real threat of kaiju can dampen the spirits of the people. If anything, being able to find some humor in the sordid state of the world seems to be keeping the spirits of the people up. The fact that some people are walking the streets dressed up as very real kaiju that have attacked the city before seems to prove this point.

Though Halloween is over, the celebrations are dragging on for longer than usual this year. Lucky you, right? After a month of loss and devastation in Transylvania, you still get to enjoy Halloween! Shops, restaurants and bars are milking this holiday for what it’s worth while they still can. They come fully decked out in spooky decorations - skeletons, cobwebs, jack-o-lanterns, and the occasional witch cauldron! Outsiders may simply enjoy the sight of costumed locals wandering the streets, but if they feel inclined to dress up as well, they can buy a costume from a store or use their style upgrade to make a costume (or simply assume that the style upgrade chip had glitched them into a particular costume). Some events running in the city include:

- Bars and clubs are serving Halloween themed drinks and food. Some examples of this would be alcohol served in a jack-o-lantern or smoky cauldron, blood-themed cocktails, cookies with frosted spiders on them, candied apples, pumpkin-flavored food and many more. Feel free to make up your own.
- The Harlem bar in Tokyo is hosting a Halloween rave with drinks, music, and a costume party! The customers with the most impressive, scariest, or sexiest costume get to be crowned king or queen of the bar for the night and will be treated to bottomless drinks and a 50,000 KRYPTO gift card.

- The Tachikawa region of Neo Tokyo is hosting their annual yokai festival! People are filling the streets wearing masks or dressing up as yokai, and coming to the festival in a costume is mandatory or you will be turned away. Don’t worry, a face-painting stall has been set up to help characters become the yokai of their dreams! Live music is playing, people are dancing, and there are numerous stalls selling traditional snacks and yokai-themed foods.

- Pop-up haunted houses and zombie houses are still running in the area! Test your courage by wandering through a spooky, dark room filled with ghastly ghouls, zombies and werewolves (who happen to be … robots or people in costume). Or perhaps you fancy a zombie run event in the dead of the night? Being chased by zombie actors and robot zombies sounds like an excellent way to get some cardio in. (These zombies and ghouls are paid actors and will not harm the customers in any way, so any violence against them is prohibited and will get you kicked out.)

- The Bandai store is excited to reveal its latest holographic virtual pet: Kasper! Kasper exists as a keychain of a cartoon ghost. When turned on, it projects the hologram of a cutesy-looking ghost into the air. This small ghost can float around in the air and phase through walls and people. It is programmed to behave like a pet, coming to its owner when called, enjoying being petted, and getting into some mischief on occasion. Very much like a Tamagotchi, Kasper needs frequent attention or he will fade away and the user will need to start the game over. Outsiders may purchase this toy if they wish. It is for leisure purposes only and cannot be used for carrying things or espionage.

With the popularity of Halloween, law enforcement is on high alert for unruly characters and will be breaking up gatherings of too many people or arresting anyone appearing to be heavily intoxicated in public. There’s a certain gang of trouble-makers who seem to be finding joy in scaring people for real, and they do this by dressing up in clown costumes and chasing people down the street with real weapons. There have even been reports of these hooligans assaulting people for real. Any Outsider who can wrangle these trouble-makers and present them to law enforcement will receive a decent reward from the city.

For the period of Halloween, LILITH has given clearance for inhuman Outsiders to roam the streets without their cloaking disguises. They might get many compliments for their impressive ‘costumes’.

▶ 004. BLOOD DRIVE.

Not only is the mission to Transylvania highly classified, but the existence of vampires amongst the Outsiders is also classified information. For the sake of Neo Tokyo’s stability, LILITH will be ordering all Outsiders to keep this information under wraps. Thankfully, a fanged vampire would not look too out of place amongst the many costumed crowds in Neo Tokyo. In fact, play into the vampire theme, and you might even get your picture taken! You don't need to answer them when your image doesn't show up on film, it's all part of the magic with nowadays technology.

As Dr. Spim works tirelessly on a cure, freshly turned vampires will need to find ways to cope with the changes. A special monitor will be added to their implant that will alert them when they are dangerously low on blood and need to feed. If they continue to ignore these warnings, LILITH security robots will prevent them from leaving the base, forcing them to feed on a blood bag or find a friend to feed on. With some Outsiders going feral from their thirst for blood, LILITH simply cannot allow the people of Neo Tokyo to be put at risk. Vampires who are sensitive to the sun (it's up to you if you would like them to be a daywalker or not) will be given medicated sunscreen that will offer some protection from the sun. It is still recommended that they wear protective clothing and stay in the shade, however.

With the grave hit that LILITH has taken following the last mission, LILITH’s blood bank is running lower than ever before. Not only did the wounded require blood transfusions, but a good number of Outsiders have been turned into vampires and require a regular food source. A creative solution has been proposed: it’s time for a blood drive! LILITH has set up a medical booth in the streets of Shibuya where volunteers and Outsiders may visit and donate blood. For some added irony, the blood drive is vampire-themed, but LILITH would prefer that Outsiders not tell the donors about the fact that some of their blood will go on to feed actual vampires.

Donors rest on one of the comfortable chairs provided, and a trained medical staff or robot will prick them, drawing out enough blood to fill a bag. Those who do not know their blood type can be tested today and get a cute sticker with their blood type on it! Outsiders may become donors themselves or volunteer to prick others; specialized training will be provided for volunteers. There is a refreshment and relaxation area providing beverages and a light meal (such as little cakes, small sandwiches and onigiri) to all donors.

▶ 005. THE ORPHANS.

Following the mission in Transylvania, several cultist children have been brought back to base. LILITH has prepared a holding area with beds for them to stay in temporarily as a long-term solution is prepared.

These children are understandably very affected by what had happened to them and the town they once considered home. In their perspective, LILITH Outsiders had come out of nowhere and the adults in their town had treated them with hospitality. It was typical for the people of the town to occasionally disappear, and the adults would call it being ‘chosen’ by the Lord of the Forest. What was not typical was what had happened in late October: how chaos had emerged between the people of the town and those from outside, which led to parts of the village being burned down, food being taken, and children being whisked away to this mysterious land.

Someone should probably fill them in on the real story.

Being ripped away from your entire world in such a drastic and violent way would not be easy for anyone to cope with. Most of the children appear miserable and withdrawn, some refusing to eat, some crying in their corners and some refusing to speak. While most of the children are shaken with terror, a few of them cope with their raw emotions by lashing out, hitting the other children, kicking the walls and throwing things at other people. The road to recovery for them appears to be a long one, and currently, it’s not clear if they even can go on to live a normal life after everything they have been through.

Since the Outsiders now have some time on their hands, they are heavily encouraged to make an organized effort to help these children. The holding area looks as clinical as any other hospital room and could use …warmer decor. The area is also bereft of toys or anything a child would typically enjoy, so there’s little for these troubled children to do but sit in their corners feeling miserable for themselves. LILITH does provide robot nannies capable of changing diapers and teaching mathematics, but they are cold and emotionless, lacking any real affection. Presently, LILITH does not have the funds to do anything more than meet these childrens’ basic needs, so they are counting on the Outsiders to provide their support in any way they know how. Keep them company? Teach them something new? Give them treats? Take them trick-o-treating? Every Outsider has a different skill to offer.

Outsiders who gain the trust of certain children will be granted clearance to take them around the base and into the city of Neo Tokyo. These children have grown up isolated from modern technology and people outside their town–the sights and sounds will be overwhelming for them, especially with so many people in costumes, so field trips need to be planned carefully.

While still in the early stages, the Outsider known as PUNISHER (Nicholas D. Wolfwood) has proposed that an orphanage be raised to provide shelter for disadvantaged children in Neo Tokyo. LILITH has plans to make a generous donation to this project, and is calling on Outsiders to raise funds however they see fit. Some examples on how to raise funds include: speaking to investors for toy companies, spreading awareness to their social media followings, putting up musical performances or selling merchandise. (If you wish to have your character gain fans or a following online to aid in the fundraising, you do not need mod permission and can just assume it happens.)

▶ 006. AFTERWORD.

Welcome to our 7th TDM! All TDM threads are game canon and characters who don't app will be glitched out of this world. As the TDM will act as the event, existing characters are heavily encouraged to participate. Please use this format for top levels: CHARACTER | CANON | CURRENT / NEW CHARACTER.

There are currently 8 available player slots. New players are welcome to use this TDM to get samples for when APPLICATIONS open.

Use the code provided in the ARRIVAL prompt if you'd like to participate in the ice breaker, and place it in your top level along with your other prompts. Anything such as civilian name or username can be marked as UNDECIDED if you're unsure of what you'd like your character to have for now. Though it says 'Orientation', existing characters can still participate in the ice-breaker.

The monthly mingle will reveal information about payment for last month's mission and the winners for KO and top hit.

Please note that all tags in this log will count for 2 reward points each and will count towards November AC.

TDM #7 BREAKDOWN/RECAP (CLICK TO EXPAND)
1. ARRIVAL PROMPT: Newcomers arrive with ocular and brain implants, and are given a breakdown of the premise with an icebreaker orientation to complete. Newcomers are placed in gray loungewear while they are being sorted into teams. Blood based food will be served for all vampire turned Outsiders with Halloween themed food for non-vampires. Characters who lost a body part or two in Transylvania may get a free prosthetic when they are ready. On-base therapy and counseling sessions are offered.

2. SIMULATION: An optional simulation prompt featuring TRIANGLE HEAD is offered in a survival-horror themed simulation. Some after affects from this simulation may cause characters to feel fear and panic and are encouraged to watch comforting videos, possibly together, to counteract the side effects.

3. THIS IS HALLOWEEN: Halloween celebration spills into November with Halloween themed bars, costume parties, youkai festival, and the reveal of Kasper, a hologram virtual pet. Troublemaking gangs dressed as clowns wreck havoc when they see a chance and Outsiders are free to intervene for a reward.

4. BLOOD DRIVE: A blood drive to aid in feeding vampiric Outsiders is offered in Shibuya. Outsiders may be donors or phlebotomists for this task.

5. THE ORPHANS: Cultists orphans are held on base while LILITH works on establishing an orphanage for both cultist children and orphans on the street. Outsiders are encouraged to take care of them and even take them trick-or-treating until their new home is ready.

Sigrun Eide

Username: Trollslayer
Civilian Identity: Solveig Asbjorn
Age: 32
Species: Human
Origin:
Dalsnes, Norway
Blood Type: O-

Do you believe in ghosts?

I don’t think I can say no after everything I have seen in the Silent World, so yep, I do!

001. Arrival
Sigrun had been perplexed over everything going on with the questionnaire over her vision. She can be seen rubbing her eyes once or twice, as if trying to bat it away. When it doesn’t she seems to tilt her head weird and squint at different times. “What kind of weird afterimage is this... did I stare at something too long?” she mutters under her breath.

She blinks wide when the information slips into her mind, leaning back in her chair in the cafeteria as it’s received. She only mutters under her breath, “Is this what a mage feelings like?”

“Kaiju? Wait- like big monsters? Giants?” she mutters. Suddenly any larger concerns seem to strangely melt away. She stretches out a little bit and says, “Sounds good, though I’m perfectly fine hunting down Giants! Sounds like a regular day at home!”
She seems... oddly chipper for someone given all this information.

002. Simulation
An abandoned city with dense fog wasn’t exactly a creepy place completely for her. It still made her feel the tension of something lingering in the darkness, but this sense of danger was something she had honed long ago.

The crisp air, the dense fog, the feeling of something creeping around the corner. Others would call it horror, Sigrun called it survival instincts. Engraved and burned into her mind since she was little.

The annoying little pop up in the corner of her eyes that flicked into view didn’t exactly help her from not jumping a little.

Monsters Slain: 0/20
“My kind of mission,” she says with a grin.

She prepares herself before heading more into the strange alleyways of the place. She can hear something around the corner, clawing and scuttling. She races around the corner and raised the simulated weapon in her hand (it felt so real), but didn't stop her from jumping a little.
003. This is Halloween

Neo Toyko was brighter than what she was used to.

She had expected something more rural... even run down. Not the bright multicoloured lights and weird get ups and oddly shaped street foods she was seeing. “You’d think that the place would look worse,” she mumbles. She sighs and shakes her head and looks around. It does remind her of some festivals... the kind is just... interesting.

“How can you tell what a monster is and what’s just a civilian with all of this around?” she wonders to herself. “Maybe some kind of giant warding-off festival?” She shrugs her shoulders and continues along as she examines the place feeling a little bit out of place.

Sigrun currently is still in work mode rather than civilian mode, despite being outside the base.

Halloween! (Hands you a little dragon mermaid)

[personal profile] lunarchivist 2024-11-01 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
That woman is...a new Outsider, he can tell that much. If her standing around ogling everything wasn't enough of a giveaway...he recognizes her from the picture in the orientation files that came in this wave.

"That depends on what you would classify as a monster, I suppose," Dan Heng answers the likely rhetorical question. He...well. He's not in his normal clothing either. Thankfully his style upgrade struck on Halloween, so there's an easy explanation for why he's in a mermaid dress (I will design something soon but imagine something like this for now lmao) and. Once again cannot walk. Ugh.

His cloaking device is also off, so his usual horns and scales are visable, and oddly compliment the look.

So he rolls up to the woman in an electric wheelchair, which is pretty easy to do, since she's parting the crowded streets by just standing there and staring at the lights.

"From what I know, this is a normal sized festival, not giant. I'm not sure if it would ward off anything, regardless..." Dan Heng gives a small bow from the waist in his chair. "I am Dan Heng. You must be new here. Were you looking for anything in particular, Miss...?"

"Well... I'd say something that fits more with a troll... something undead, something feral," she says. She doesn't look at him at first, looking around the place to scan the area.

She then looks at him and blinks in surprise, "I... wasn't expected a fish man tonight." She looks him over a few times. Not that she doesn't look odd either, given how she's been acting.

"I don't mind a little survey intelligence," she grins a little before sighing. "But it feels weird that it don't got much of a purpose for how wide spread it is. You'd think it would just be someone's birthday with weird tastes."

She still grins and says, "Well nice to meet ya and I am, but I'll be on my feet in no time!" (She hopes.)

She shrugs and crosses her arms, "Just trying to get a handle on this place actually! If I'm gonna be here for... quite a while." She looks over the different festivities going on. "You?"
lunarchivist: (Thoughtful chat)

Sigrun please. Manners. Introduce thyself

[personal profile] lunarchivist 2024-11-02 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Undead...trolls?" That's...a curious response. He kind of wants to ask more...

But then gets asked about being a fish man. Sigh. "I am a dragon actually, thank you. The mer-costume was. Not by choice..." He huffs. Dragon is technically incorrect too, but the term "Vidyadhara" tends to just confuse people more.

He takes in her more military words, considering. LILITH chose well if this woman has military backing. But first...he rolls up so he's right beside her, along the wall of...it's a haunted house. It's fine. They're out of the way.

"I have not been here too long, no. About a month?" What an eventful month that was... "I know of a holiday in my "world" that's. Something like this. But not quite...from what I understand, this has more to do with celebrating the dead. Honoring them."

He looks to her, looking a little pained as he attempts a small smile. "Perhaps if the dead are satisfied, their spirits will not linger and haunt the living. Or perhaps it is...simply to have some levity when the world is suffering tragedy and fear..." He watches children nearby, the joy on their faces seeing an inflatable dinosaur walk by. And then a wolf costume- he grimaces, redirecting fast.

"I did not catch your name, Miss."
norwegianblade: (Sigrun_sad)

I love I keep forgetting; this is my curse.

[personal profile] norwegianblade 2024-11-02 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Trolls, giants, beasts," she rattles off. "Same stuff, different kinds! I've handled quite a few in my service! Even killed some with my bare hands!"

She pauses for a minute. A bit of confusion flashes through her face. She takes a minute before leaning closer to his face. It's true... the mer-costume is not helping things. To her it looks just like a costume she's been seeing of people running around here aimlessly doing... whatever with this weird festival. She squints and says, "Really? A dragon. I expected something... different. More scales. Fire breathing. But with everything weird going on.... I'll take your word for it, for now." She glances back at the festival and sighs. At this point, she wouldn't be surprised if this guy is pulling her leg.

"How's it been like at the base then? The progress on saving the place?" she asks. a True smile spreads across her face as she says, "This whole mission sounds like a nice vacation!"

She raises an eyebrow over the idea of the holiday and looks back at the strange skeleton custom that she can see in the distance as well as the neon lights. "I.... don't think that's right," she mutters. "It's a little.... crazy than it is somber. No bonfire either... Unless the dead here just really liked a good feast and festival."

Her expression softens a little. She seems to be thinking about something else but there's still a light smile across her face. She mumbles, "Giving one last hurrah, I can respect that."

She stands up a little straighter, "Oh! Sigrun Edie, Captain in Norway!"

It is ok, memory is a fickle thing lmao. You are my sister in ADHD (in spirit)

"That is quite the resume. I see why LILITH brought you here. We've faced all sorts of monsters here; we could benefit from someone of your skillset." Why with her bare hands...?

Dan Heng's eyes widen, and he leans back in his wheelchair a bit when she looks him over. On closer look, his eyes are very bright, near luminous. And his pupils constrict in alarm, narrowing down to slits. His teeth are sharp when he talks. All more subtle than the horns and scales, but it's a pretty consistent theme, if nothing else. But also ma'am please, his personal space! "Yes. My kind is descended from a dragon. That's a simplified explanation. We are more attuned to...water than fire, but some may have control over fire?" Just not him. He's a water noodle through and through.

Dan Heng can't hide a wince at her question. "The base is. Fine. Relatively safe. Good people here. It's just...well. I've been here a month, but the last mission we went on was...harrowing." Still an understatement. "We...no. I wasn't much help." Locked up in a dungeon, needing to be rescued. Useless. "The Outsiders defeated the kaiju in Transylvania, but...there were many casualties. Some amongst our number, and many civilians. You've seen the displaced children, I'm sure." Yes the villagers were trying to sacrifice him and his teammates. And the Outsiders' lives take priority. It still makes him sick, how many died that day... "I...hope you face easier missions than that, Miss." He truly does.

The shadow over his heart eases as he watches revelers with her. To him, that's what this is about. "Perhaps they're tired of being somber. Maybe they want to enjoy frivolity like they did in life. For me it's been...nice to see so many smiles, after everything." Dan Heng himself smiles softly, watching the skeleton costumed person make the joke about playing their rib bones like a xylophone, likely with some creative cybernetics.

"Like that, yes. I know I'd like my loved ones to find happiness in my absence, if I were to pass on. And I think the ability to enjoy the life you have, to laugh even with danger around the corner....it's important." He shrugs. "It keeps up morale, if nothing else." All this might be surprising for someone so soft-spoken, but then, it might be the product of introspective thoughts...

Dan Heng smiles more at here enthusiastic introduction. "Well met, Captain Sigrun. I'm sure we will fight together here, sometime soon. When I'm not. Er." He looks down at the restrictive mermaid costume. "Stuck in this outfit." Deadpan. Tired. He's really tired of not being able to walk for various reasons, to be honest. ((Too bad his player thinks it's funny))

She grins widely, “Thanks! This is the second time I’ve been hand picked for something like this! But that wasn’t exactly for monster killing...” Well... the last time she volunteered but... hey, it counts!

She leans a little closer when she spies those strange eyes. At first, from a glance, they look human, until they shift like something she hasn’t seen before. She gasps a little and finally gets a better picture. It’s subtle, but nothing like a transformation into a troll. If anything, it reminds her of Kitty than anything else! “Well, that’s something you don’t see every day!” she chuckles and leans back naturally. She seems to be somewhat aware of personal space at least? “So you’re more like a fish cat?”

She pauses and explains, “Eyes and teeth like a cat but likes water like a fish.” This is feeling like that one time she crashed a tank...

She tilts her head a little at the change of attitude. She pauses, a feeling of pain tugging at her chest. She’s... been thought that once before. Failure, feeling like everything messed up and it’s your fault.

She reaches out and puts a hand on his shoulder, “Hey... Relax, kid. I’m sure LILITH picked ya for a reason.” Her smile grows a little more somber, “When warriors go out hunting or invade a nest, we know there’s going to be casualties... Something is going to happen. Something bad among the goal. It’s life...”

She sighs and continues, “One of my last crew mates talked about two people he met on a fishing boat. One of them had a mind of steel and the other was certain his life would end from the smallest thing. The steel guy’s stomach got shredded by a beast. He was up and working a week after surgery. The other guy got a bad paper cut and then died from organ failure.”

She pauses again to try to figure out the rest of it all, her face scrunched in thought, “Things can... feel like a test. I can’t say its not something I’ve... not experienced. But you face it, you fight, and you do your best not to die, ha.”

She plays it off as being easy, and dodges around her own struggles enough to make it only subtle. But... she has seen the orphans. Seen the pain. She can’t pretend she hasn’t done that song and dance before.

Her mind goes to that Finn on her trip. She looks up at the street, wondering for a moment if that skald would like to have seen this.

Her violet eyes look back at him, “It’s your choice to see it as a bump in the road or not.”

She grins and nods, looking at the street, “One last bit of fire before they become memory. That’s a vikings way. Big bonfire to send em off... The lights will do.”

She does watch a neon looking monster of some kind lumber through the streets, it looks like a two person costume.

“That’s vikings for ya! We always have these big feasts after hunts, a sign of triumph. We know the danger... but we laugh it off and see it as a place of honour. To fight and protect is what we do best, what we’re made for.” She gives him a light bonk on the head, “Just first focus on getting those legs fixed.... Wait, are they broken?”

She chuckles, “I’d love to see why LILITH chose a kid like you! You gotta have something under those scaly fish sleeves!”

She pauses as she looks at it, “That’s a costume?”

Dan Heng raises an eyebrow. "Something like this, but not monster killing? What was it, if I may ask?"

.....great Akivili of the Silver Rails, this woman is not averse to being up close and personal. They're nearly nose to nose with how close she is, and he's debating between pushing her away or just absconding-- ah she's leaning back. Goodness. "I am a vidyadhara, a race of people descended from a dragon. Not a cat, not a fish. We are aquatic in nature, but that doesn't mean fish..." (But yes he's totally a cat-coded guy. He cannot escape this.)

...her later conclusion has him sighing and running a hand over his face. "Sure. Whatever makes sense to you, Captain." This is not the hill he wants to die on. Some of that sulky attitude feeds into the dipping mood. It doesn't matter what he is. It didn't stop what happened.

Sigrun continues to throw personal space to the wind and lays a hand on his shoulder. ....He twitches, but...doesn't hate it. He's always found himself enjoying the warmth of human touch, something he can't offer as cold blooded as he is. He allows it, as this woman he'd just met offers out words of comfort. She...didn't have to. She doesn't have to do this.

Being reached out to first...he can never quite get used to it. So he keeps his head bowed, peering up at her through dark bangs. The story is...a bit confusing, but he gets what she's trying to say. Have hope. Keep getting back up. Willpower can indeed be a powerful driving force...

Is that not the main principle of the Trailblaze?

((Oooh you know it, Sigrun. You know Tuuri would have adored this place...))

....the kidnapping of Outsiders and the complete massacre and arson of an entire village is hardly a "bump in the road" but...he's not mad. He understands what she means. Dan Heng offers a wan smile. "Thank you, Captain Sigrun. I know we will grow past this. It's just...been difficult."

He looks with her again at the lights, how they flicker in some places like a fire. He has read of cultures using fire to send people off. The lights also remind him of stars. And the strange costumes, all the strange and wonderful civilizations and people he'd gotten to meet amongst the galaxy of worlds. Perhaps that's also why it's comforting, despite all the noise and crowds. Those usually overwhelm him. "I'm glad you agree," he says, a bit wry, a tiny bit teasing.

She did mention Norway, and vikings. This world has a form of those; he remembers reading of them, and the customs she talks about ring a bell with their similarities. "It sounds lively- ah." Head bonk. MA'AM. His personal space!!! Keep it up, if he hated it he would have tried biting her or something lmao.

Dan Heng clears his throat, a bit embarrassed about the costume. First. "My legs were broken on the mission. Badly." Beaten over and over by a bloody rock until he stopped fighting stopped trying to run stopped stop stop stop please stop-- he shivers, taking a deep breath. "But they've since healed. This...costume. It's a technology malfunction I cannot undo for the day, so." He huffs, glaring at the "tail" like it bit him. "My horns are real. The clothing is a costume. A very restrictive one. I suppose it is fortunate my past injury gave me easy access to a mobility aid..."

She grins widely, “I was chosen as the captain to obtain forgetten information from the Silent World! We had five crew members; a skald, a scout, a cleanser, and a medic! We were there for months!”

No... No she isn’t. Military quarters and tents teach you quickly to deal with little personal space. She doesn’t seem to mind at all though. She does raise an eyebrow and say, “That’s... nothing like what we got back home. Sounds like a fable from back home rather than the real thing...”

She gives a thumbs up. She clearly has a bit of the same quality March 7th has. She just agrees with a smile and moves on wholeheartedly. Oh boi....

She does however give his shoulder a light squeeze, she seems genuine in the attempt to try to cheer them up. The base needs to have some moral around it or it will fall to pieces, Sigrun has seen it before. Been apart of that downtrodden nature. She doesn’t know if she told the story right, but she finishes it by saying, “Don’t sell yourself short when you make a fumble. Trust me, the medic we had on board couldn’t shoot well. At all.”

“You’re still here,” she smiles. “There’s still another day.” She looks back and sighs. “Some missions.... have a cost is all. Sometimes you can’t avoid them. Best to accept and move on.”

“It’s what we do after Troll Hunting season. We have a Pyre after the big missions, cremate the bodies we can bring home and think of everyone we lost in nests and raids against the Troll and Giants in the area,” she says. “It’s weird tradition here... but.... Yeah. It’s a way of saying ‘You were brave and unwavering, you put up a good fight that gave us victory, we’ll continue to fight in your name. Farewell.’” There’s.... a sombre look in her eyes. She remembers how it burned when she lost someone she knew.... How it tore her apart.

“So you’re not allowed to mope!” She says. “This is their celebration. So you can’t just sit here and be glum like that! There’s a time to be sad and a time to just... appreciate they were here,” she says after she bonks him.

Sigrun... is not a tactful person. “Ah, reminds me of someone who broke both her arms in a nest raid at the end of Troll hunting season!” Ma’am. Please. Not now. However, she raises an eyebrow at the shivering. “That sounds.... weirdly unnecessary and annoying.” She folds her arms and looks over the strange outfit with a pinched squint. “Really? Those are?” She points at the horns.

She does look at him and nod. Maybe he just needs a distraction or something, “Let’s take a look around... See if we can’t find anything interesting to do. Enjoy this festival as we should."

Silent World? Is everything really quiet there?
norwegianblade: (Sigrun_oh)

[personal profile] norwegianblade 2024-11-01 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)

Mostly.... Probably on the account of all the trolls and most of everyone from the old world being wiped out. Known world is all that's left that has regular people in it.

Wiped out? What happened??
norwegianblade: (Sigrun_oh)

[personal profile] norwegianblade 2024-11-02 04:00 am (UTC)(link)

Yep, at least that's what we know. Nobody else has just...appeared from the Silent World on their own talking about other places we don't know about.

Rash Illness. It's a weird thing that many people now are immune to, including myself, but back in the day it would infect and warp things into trolls. People and animals. Even now, some people aren't immune.

It's turned into a endless horde we have to fight against!

[personal profile] swiftshatter 2024-11-02 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa, that's pretty crazy. And you really had to spend all your time fighting those things? Doesn't that get pretty tough? What happens if your friends end up turning into those monsters?
norwegianblade: (Sigrun_oh)

[personal profile] norwegianblade 2024-11-02 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)

Most of the time yeah, it's a full time job. Especially when giants are around; which we go handle when needed. Eh, not at all really! It's tradition, a way to make our families and people proud! LILITH's entire mission for me is a vacation for me!

My job is to make sure that doesn't happen. I'm immune to the virus and a lot of us are now. Those who aren't don't come with us in order to not have to deal with that risk. Usually. In a recent mission I was given, in a crew of 5, only one of us wasn't immune. And that was likely due to... her skills being pretty important and not easy to come by...

I'm sure everyone's really proud of you. What you're doing really does sound incredibly important. With any luck, one day you guys will be able to figure out the cause of the problem and be able to solve it so it doesn't happen anymore.

But man, I wish I could say the same for myself. I don't usually end up fighting giant monsters on a day to day basis. Maybe you can give me pointers once we're out on the field.

Haha, well I am a captain that got hand picked to find lost knowledge in the silent world! So yeah, I'm pretty great at what I do! And so are the others back where I'm from.

Maybe one day, yeah. Though I don't know what we'd all do when it's over. Kinda weird to think about.

That's another Tuesday for me! And sure, I can definitely give you some pointers! We all have the same mission, not point in keeping secrets to myself!

norwegianblade: (Sigrun_confident)

[personal profile] norwegianblade 2024-11-02 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)

Yep! And not at all! I'm a troll slayer through and through, its what my family and country is known for!

Where do you come from? Tell me about it.
norwegianblade: (Sigrun_oh)

[personal profile] norwegianblade 2024-11-03 04:28 am (UTC)(link)

I come from Norway! It's one of the last countries in the world that survived the Rash Illness 50 years ago, back where I'm from at least. Everything else is pretty much gone, as much as we know right now. I can feel for what this place is going through.... Kinda. Wasn't there for it myself but my family has been dealing with it for generations.

So basically, the world got infected by a serious illness where nobody was immune to it. We got a lot more immune folks now... but not everyone. Trolls were the result of the illness.

newphew: (don't give up 'till)

[personal profile] newphew 2024-11-03 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[ it is good to know that sigrun will exposition in command. not that she can see it, but hunter is absorbing all of this in fascination ]

sO your family become troll hunters. They must be dangerous.

Where DiD it come from? The illness?

[personal profile] norwegianblade 2024-11-03 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[Chatter box!]

Basically yeah! Of course it's dangerous, but that's just life! We handle it just fine!

The Rash Illness? No idea... Nobody knows.

And you haven't found a cure yet? So you hafe to hunt them?
norwegianblade: (Sigrun_oh)

[personal profile] norwegianblade 2024-11-13 07:22 am (UTC)(link)

Yep, no cure.

So we don't have much choice. My family take pride in it, but there's people who of course can't have that same occupation. Met a guy like that before.
