TEST DRIVE #15

TEST DRIVE MEME #15
CONTENT WARNINGS: snakes, zombies, medical testing, blood, earthquakes, Florida

▶ 001. ARRIVAL / CAFETERIA. (NEO TOKYO BASE).

It happens in the blink of an eye, a dash of time – you're taken from where you were. What you were doing... it isn't important any more, and slowly, you give up the desire of your normal life. When you awaken, figures are looking down on you from a surgical table. "Yeah, this one will do. Let's take them to the rest." That's all you see before losing consciousness again, only to wake up in a pod with many others.

"Your questions will be answered soon enough, as I'm sure you will have many," a female, robotic voice says.

Just then, you regain consciousness in a pool of stasis liquid along with many others. You realize you are underground. Your new life is about to begin... whether you like it or not.

Welcome to Neo Tokyo. Pods drain their stasis fluid, which wakes each Outsider and they emerge from their pod in only undergarments. Directed to a locker room in the medical bay, they find a towel to dry off with and a set of gray loungewear to wear as LILITH makes the final decision in assigning the Outsiders to their rightful teams. If a character has any accessibility needs, they will be found here.

It's around this time they will feel a sharp pain at the back of their eyes, almost like there’s a foreign body lodged on the inside of their head. This pain will subside quickly as their body adapts to the changes, but there will always be a sensation of something being not quite right; that their bodies have been changed forever. It might take some getting used to, but over time the sensation will become familiar. In the stasis pods, all Outsiders have been surgically fitted with ocular and brain implants that will enable them to communicate with LILITH and the rest of the crew, as well as providing them the information they require. Almost like a computer screen has been loaded into their brains, they will see a loading screen as the implant completes its download.

A questionnaire will then pop up, waiting for their answer. A voice, robotic and feminine, will also read along in their brain for them.

If you could wish upon a star, what would you wish for?
Outsiders will receive a quick debrief about their situation: they will be told that the year is 2279, and they have been taken to Neo Tokyo, one of the last bastions of mankind in a world terrorized by various Kaiju and monsters. Only a third of the population remains, and LILITH has gathered talented people from other dimensions here as a last ditch effort to save humanity. Outsiders are free to continue asking LILITH questions through their implant, but there’s no guarantee that they will provide them with a straight answer.

Outsiders will also notice an implant in their dominant wrist. This implant has a barcode in it that will enable them to purchase goods from the local stores in Neo Tokyo. They will receive a starting balance of 15,000 KRYPTOS (about USD 100), which is barely enough for a few good meals, groceries, and supplies. They can view their current balance through a hologram window projected by their ocular implant.

In the cafeteria area, food is being served. The kitchen can be seen, and a few robots are busy stirring pots and preparing the dishes. The current offerings are is Nordic fare with freeze dried ice cream desserts! It is somewhat good, especially for those who are on the side of being leery of the offerings of the past.

"Greetings, my name is SYNTHIA and I will be taking care of you today. Worry not, my children. You are in safe hands. I have taken care of you all for many years now, and I will continue to do so in the upcoming year."

▶ 002. Like a satеllite, now I'm ready to fly.

Bjorn the fearless is alive, the Outsiders’ kindness being something that spreads not just through LILITH base, but rumors buzz throughout Neo-Tokyo that whatever had transpired only weeks ago is mostly settled, thanks to them.

Thanks to the Rift-cure the Outsiders created the year before, LILITH is able to stabilize Bjorn's condition. Unfortunately, this uses up much of their limited supply at the moment. LILITH urges the Outsiders and all agents to be careful in the coming weeks and even months until they can replenish their supply.

In the meantime, the Outsider's decision to spare Bjorn is a huge topic of discussion on base. With his condition improving and their cybernetic implants updating to help with communication, they are able to finally get answers. There is a significant amount about his life and experiences he refuses to share, but any Outsiders wandering around the base might see him walking with some of the leadership, with maps and tablets, as they plan out the next course of action. When the revelation comes, it hits all the implants of the Outsiders in a clear message.

“Dear Angels of LILITH. The decision to permit our guest to live was a difficult one, but it has proven to be one that was well thought. With the help of Bjorn, we have been able to pinpoint where the Rifts are most active, and understand the dangers of them far better. We are incredibly grateful for all your hard work, and the effort that it has taken for you to continue to fight. Our preparations begin now, for humanity, and all of us.”

Yamakawa is quick to inform the Outsiders of their next location: they will be returning to the United States, where LILITH staff have information about something that might help with their upcoming missions. Yamakawa explains that although the plug suits were able to withstand the rift energies last month, most of them had been… pushed to their limit. Even with their upgrades, the plugsuits simply can only take so much, and they’ll have need of the supplies that they can get from the US, because they seem to have the largest available supply of spaceworthy ships.

Outsiders are tasked with a series of activities to help them prepare for their upcoming mission:
  • During the night, scientists request that the Outsiders observe the moon and make note of anything odd that they might be able to see. What are you looking for? They’re a little cagey, but any signs of Rift activity, movement, anything that just seems… Wrong.
  • In the lounge, a new card game has been dropped off. It seems like a simple game of snap, pairing up cards, but all the cards refer to constellations in the sky, and under the design there is a fun fact about each one! Examples include "The Hydra is the largest constellation in the night sky!" and “The Greeks' knowledge of the constellations stretches way back in time at least to the 8th century BC!”
  • A new mode has been added to the Simulation room. There’s a certain shift in gravity, and Outsiders will find they weigh approximately 16.6% of their normal weight. How odd!
  • More scientifically inclined Outsiders will be tasked with some build your own robot games, with lots of intricate wiring, cameras and electronics. When done, they can make a range of things, including drones, rovers, and small machines with happy, emoting faces that just seem so happy to be here.
  • Throughout all the activities, members of LILITH staff will stop by and offer a helping hand, and will answer some questions regarding Bjorn: yes, he seems far more stable now; yes, he is being as helpful as possible; no, they no longer regard him as a threat. Thanks to his treatment, he seems as regular a man as someone as affected as he can be, and they hope that his hard work will prove all the more helpful in the future. And again, be careful with Rift exposure. Their cure is very limited right now

▶ 003. Simulation: Something in the Water.

To further prepare for their assignment, LILITH reaches out to their branch in the United States for more information. In response, they send data to Neo Tokyo to use in their briefings. The data consists of environmental data, common threats in the region, and interestingly, travel recommendations? While most of this information will simply be given to the Outsiders to download, they're also encouraged to get a head start in how they use the information.

Outsiders will be taken to the Simulation Room to train. The room flickers and the holograms align to create a virtual version of a warm, humid swamp. Welcome to a virtual version of the Florida Everglades, one of the United States' greatest anomalies and home to an uncommonly large amount of strange kaiju.
  • Airboa: A non-native boa constrictor type kaiju. They are extremely long and travel at high speeds that allow them to glide across the water quickly. Their bodies are extremely strong. They are known for constricting around their prey, crushing or suffocating other animals or people. Due to their size, they must constantly move to hunt and fight effectively. If they can be stopped, their bodies become burdensome resulting in becoming tangled within itself and difficulty moving.
  • Megators: Native alligator kaiju that can travel on land and in water. They are especially dangerous in water and extremely aggressive. They are extremely territorial and are known to attack boats, large animals, humans, and even other kaiju. Their jaws are incredibly powerful and can rip limbs off. On land, they run fast but tire quickly leaving them exhausted and vulnerable. In the water? They’re unmatched in speed. The best time to catch them unaware on the beach, and take them down quickly.
  • Otterchaos: Small kaiju related to river otters. Otterchaos get their names because despite how cute they may look, they are extremely violent and territorial. They have razor sharp claws and teeth that they use to maul prey. Extremely adept on both land and in water, they are known to travel in packs making them even more dangerous. Fortunately, they are quite small (about the size of a medium dog) which can make them easy to overpower if you can keep the upperhand.
  • Floridaman: A mutated human-kaiju hybrid that is something like a cross between a zombie and the Megators. They wander the swamp individually and in small hoards. Their bites and scratches are extremely dangerous due to the high levels of bacteria in the Everglades. Being bitten results in extreme aggression or confusion. Floridaman is not very intelligent but their endurance is very high. It’s recommended that you aim for the head to quickly defeat them.
  • Interestingly, after leaving the simulation, Outsiders may feel some lingering effects, especially those who fought Floridaman. There may still be lingering aggression or confusion. Remember, fighting is not permitted outside designated areas on base like the simulation training room. Those who are confused may trip over their tongues, speak in riddles or rhyme, or break into spontaneous Disney song.

    ▶ 004. Building Immunity.

Florida is considered a dangerous anomalous zone and local forces highly recommend making sure their gear is in shape and they are prepared for the high concentration of Rift energy in the state. Unfortunately for the Outsiders, they're in a difficult spot because of the limited supply of Rift cure after stabilizing Bjorn. Their plug suits can only do so much, and they were recently stretched to their limit.

LILITH explains that while the black markets and criminal elements have taken a great deal of kaiju parts, even your average citizen can be exposed inadvertently. Snake oil cures using Kaiju bones, weapons that were used to defend a home from an attacking kaiju, a kaiju-bone handled sword, or even some who have taken tiny kaiju (such as the beetles, or the timonsutra) as pets, despite it being illegal. Who doesn’t like a vanity pet?

Finding these items throughout the city to bring them back to LILITH will be imperative. They need as many kaiju-related parts as possible, to start condensing even the barest of rift energy into more cures. Since it uses rift energy to create an inoculation against the rifts, Outsiders will be given a small handheld rift tracker. Dr. Spim explains that it’s a recent attempt at making small, local rifts and rift-energy easier to track. Since it takes mechanical parts, they’re fairly expensive, so Outsiders are asked to use caution with them. They are also occasionally subject to errors and false positives, so Outsiders will need to charm their way out of a home, if they accidentally start getting a read on Grandmother’s urn, or tonight’s steak defrosting on the counter.

In addition, LILITH needs something else from the outsiders to build more of this and in greater numbers.

    Blood.

Blood donation stations are brought back out, having not been in use since over a year ago, but they’re still in good condition. Outsiders can donate blood to help create more of the rift-cure, and donations come with a free meal at a nearby restaurant of the outsider’s choice, and a sticker that indicates that they donated blood. Although locals don’t know what it’s for, donators will find a little bit of extra kindness is turned their way, such as gifts of small treats, freebies, or extras around town.

Those who don’t want to stick to Neo Tokyo, can travel into the forests around Kyoto to hunt local kaiju such as the Nihonzaru and the Yama-Kujira, who have started to stir from their dens and are starting to get rowdy. They’ve already started over-running some of the forest and local wildlife. Culling the herd will be helpful for the locals, and it will doubly help with bringing more rift-infected items back to base for LILITH.

And, of course, if you want to go further, veteran Outsiders who remember some other locations are encouraged to take newcomers or more recently-arrived individuals to Alexandria, Egypt, it was discovered that the pelts of some local desert kaiju were able to help block rift energy. The LILITH staff there explain that they’ve been making more plug suits solely with these skins, which do help keep the rift energies at bay. Although they don’t have very many, those that travel there will be able to receive a rift suit upgrade that has greater rift protection. If they choose to help join in on hunting parties, they will be hunting the Nilexus which travel in large packs near rocky outcroppings. They have large horns to gorge with, and their bleat can shatter glass if they sound-off loud enough, so it’s encouraged to bring earplugs, and communicate by text. By assisting with these hunting parties, Outsiders can collect more supplies to help LILITH prepare for whatever comes next.

Outsiders who leave the country and travel to Egypt once more will start to hear a rumor from any locals that they encounter. There has been an increase in earthquake activity. Especially near the Mediterranean Sea. If they ask LILITH about it, they’ll admit they’re looking into it, but they haven’t been able to pinpoint what’s causing it yet. Occasionally, news reports will catch sight of a teetering tree, or a beach where the sand vibrates, and the tides have been increasingly lower…but otherwise? There’s been very little. The ocean hasn’t even been prone to tsunamis due to the quakes. Weird!

▶ 005. DO YOU BELIEVE IN MOON CONSPIRACIES?

Outsiders do not remain in Neo Tokyo (or elsewhere!) for very long, because after a week and a half into the month, Outsiders will be tasked with taking the teleporters to Cape Canaveral, in America. As with most travel, especially for Outsiders who have not experienced it before, teleporting comes with side effects. Sickness, nausea, a vague ill-feeling that lasts for longer than expected, given that it’s already hot outside on the teleportation pad. It’s very different than March in Neo Tokyo, which is fairly chilly, but here in Florida, it is like being in a sauna. The rift energies don’t help, either. It feels oppressive to be outside, and even inside, it almost feels like being close to a rift. All are recommended to keep their plugsuits on, and even the scientists, base staff, and maintenance all wear similar plugsuits, although theirs tend to be baggy, and less form-fitting. Outsiders will be greeted not by LILITH staff, but by a team of these scientists who explain the predicament to the outsiders.

The ships that normally ferry individuals from Earth to a base on the moon have been stuck there for several weeks now. LILITH scientists recently informed them of a burst of rift energy on the base that surged, and then vanished, and the last communication on the base was… cryptic, to say the least. If asked, they will provide a copy of the recording, and though the recording is scratchy, a video that shows only a large pane window overlooking the pale surface of the moon, and a scratching sound that echoes. A voice… or is it a chorus of voices? It ebbs and flows, cuts in and out, like the void is reaching outward, and tugging at your core, as you hear…

    W̷̥̅…̵͉̆Ȇ̴̦ ̴͙͗…̸̩̾ ̸͖͐W̸̝͝A̷̟͛N̶͖̉T̵̟͊.̸̜͘ ̶͓̚ ̴̝̊W̸̕͜E̸̝̾…̶̖̿.̵͚͠ ̵̮̃C̸̗̈́R̷̙̍A̷̞͂V̶̳͘E̷̼͛.̵̺͒ ̸̻͋ ̷͕͊W̷̯̅…̵̺̓Ẹ̷͋ ̵̜̀T̸̮̈́A̸͚̽K̴̬̐E̶̬̒.̵͔̔ ̶͂͜…̵̮́ ̶̻̏W̶̡̄ ̵̝́Ȅ̵̺ ̶̼͝H̵͙̊U̷̡̅R̷̠̅T̵̼̎.̵̲̔ ̴̻͑ ̶̨̂ ̵̮̈W̷̭̉É̸̲…̷̝̒ ̷̱͐R̸͗͜E̴͕̐F̸̘̈U̸̱͝S̸̭̈́Ẹ̵̛.̶̺̕ ̸̘̐ ̸̜̕ ̸̼̉W̴̪͋…̸͔̚ ̵̧̂Ḙ̷̋ ̴̭́…̵͝ͅ ̴͓́C̴̺͑Ö̸́ͅV̸͕͗E̷̖̚T̵̜̍.̶̢̈ ̸̘̒ ̷̙́ ̶̰̓I̵̹̓…̴͚̇ ̶̜̙͕̻͉̦͔͒̏͌͘C̶̹͚̣͍̘̞̬̞͈͓̾̔͐̇̿̒̎̈́̎̈̽̚͘Ǫ̴͈̥̲̰̣̪̭̩͕̌̚N̶̙̩̖̟̟̹̎́̾͛̿͘͜ͅQ̸̧̪̖̙͖͔͚̀̈́̽̊͋͋́̂͘͠Ȕ̶̩͗͊͌͋̈́͛͝͝E̷̡͔̭̦̰̻̗̲̗̖̖̮̞̊̃͂̐̚̚͜R̴̮͔̥͎̞͓̳͐̄͗̃̇͂.̷̹̔͗͋͝.̵̣͋

They don’t know what to make of it. They’ll be clear that they haven’t been able to figure out what it is, and all communications since have been cut off. They sent their last spaceworthy ship up two weeks ago with an investigation unit, and it also hasn’t returned. They also don’t operate a teleporter that far, though the answers are somewhat vague. It sounds like visitations to the moon are strictly controlled by the US government, and most of the scientists admit they haven’t been welcomed to the base.

To get to the ships, the scientists admit that they have…some ships. The problem? While space-worthy, they aren’t exactly sturdy enough for rift travel… and in desperate need of repairs. There are several tasks that outsiders will need to undertake to be ready to find the ships needed for potential rift travel in the future:

    • Outsiders who are mechanically inclined or interested are encouraged to help with repairs. Those who are interested, but maybe lack the know-how, are free to download a educational enhancement to bridge any educational gaps. (As it is in the interest of solving a problem, this is offered at no cost to outsiders or new arrivals.) The scientists have a special course made specifically for ship maintenance crew, and will give any outsider the basic know-how to help repair the ships. However, any outsider that’s already got the experience or expertise, is welcome to dive on in.
    • Supplies will be necessary as well. While the staff have some stockpiled, it’s clear that most travelers through Cape Canaveral bring their own supplies. Outsiders will need to either collect or negotiate for supplies in the nearby cities This can be anything from food and necessities for the trip to the off-planet base, or supplies for repairs. Outsiders who are good with negotiation, or are particularly strong and can haul supplies from transport to the shipyard are useful in this role.
    • And lastly, analysts. The scientists are somewhat experienced with kaiju and rifts, but they spend most of their time trying to make travel between Cape Canaveral and the moon smoother and more comfortable. Most of them are materials scientists, or mathematicians focused on velocity and physics. Though they have been diverting their resources, they simply need help. Outsiders who are either scientifically minded, or good at coordination and pattern recognition would do well to assist the scientists here.

As the month progresses, and progress is made, there will be another spike of rift energy on the moon. It’s a new moon, but it looks like a flash of incandescent light for just a moment bursting to life on the moon’s surface. LILITH’s message comes through immediately after: that was a rift opening on the moon. It was only open for a few moments, but the evidence was clear.. A few hours later, there is another. And then another. Whatever is up there, is causing several rifts to open up.

    ▶ 006. AFTERWORD.

Welcome to our 15th TDM! All TDM threads are game canon and characters who don't app will be glitched out of this world. As the TDM will act as the event, existing characters are heavily encouraged to participate. Please use this format for top levels: CHARACTER | CANON | CURRENT / NEW CHARACTER.

There are currently ~20 available player slots. New players are welcome to use this TDM to get samples for APPLICATIONS when they open. At this time, RESERVES are open, and close on the 5th when applications open.

Use the code provided in the ARRIVAL prompt if you'd like to participate in the ice breaker, and place it in your top level along with your other prompts. Anything such as civilian name or username can be marked as UNDECIDED if you're unsure of what you'd like your character to have for now. Though it says 'Orientation', existing characters can still participate in the ice-breaker. Current Outsiders will have their Syndata files accessible for all to see. New characters will not have a Syndata profile but players can write a short blurb about the character for this.

Please note that all tags in this log will count for 2 points each and will count towards March AC.
    EVENT BREAKDOWN/RECAP (CLICK TO EXPAND)
    1. ARRIVAL / CAFETERIA. (TOKYO BASE): Newcomers arrive with ocular and brain implants, and are given a breakdown of the premise with an icebreaker orientation to complete. They will arrive in Neo Tokyo.

    2. LIKE A SATЕLLITE, NOW I'M READY TO FLY: Thanks to decisions made during the last kaiju fight, Bjorn the Outsider is alive and being stabilized. Unfortunately, a large amount of Rift medicine was used so it is in limited supply. Outsiders learn their next assignment is in Florida so they can prepare for a space mission. They are assigned some tasks to prepare for space.

    3. SIMULATION: SOMETHING IN THE WATER.: LILITH receives simulation data from the United States featuring common kaiju risks. Because it's Florida, there are an unusually large number of strange kaiju. Of note, encountering Floridaman in the simulation can result in side effects.

    4. BUILDING IMMUNITY: Due to the limited supply of Rift cure, Outsiders must help replenish their supplies. They need to collect rift energy from contaminated items to concentrate into medicine. They will be given a tracker to find these items on the local black markets, Kyoto, and other locations. They can also help with additional research by donating blood or revisiting Egypt.

5.DO YOU BELIEVE IN MOON CONSPIRACIES?: Outsiders arrive in Cape Canaveral, Florida. They learn the US government has been sending people to the moon but something is wrong with their space ships and they have received strange messages. They will need to get another space ship ready for travel and can assist with tasks. From earth, they can view strange activity on the moon.
