travel log #3 player plot - blood for the blood god(s)

Hello Synflux! Synners…

This is a plotting post for an opportunity that has come up during Travel Log #3 via Set and Tezcatlipoca having, uh, ideas for how to try and commune with the Lord of the Forest and later, locate the missing Outsiders. However, while this is their idea, we want to open this up as a wider player plot opportunity, hence this post so that everyone can see it!

CWs: animal harm (ritual sacrifice), brainwashing, bodily harm (incl. human sacrifice) but these content warnings do not apply to every opportunity, and it’s also perfectly valid for characters to try and stop these plans. This is a opt-in plot for max creativity and fun potentials for interaction!

If you’d like to read the quick Q&A with the mods, you can find that here, but here’s the more elaborated-upon version:

Because of their cultural backgrounds, Set and Tezcatlipoca will have the idea of attempting to contact the Lord of the Forest in the best way they know: ritual escalating up to (extreme) sacrifice! This is broken up into two phases:

Phase 1 (before Outsiders are kidnapped)
As a very OTA prompt, either of the gods will gladly share their ideas for attempting to commune with the Lord of the Forest. They want to see what it is, naturally, but they’re also very interested in the abundance of the land and want to replicate (or steal) that information. While this will not be successful, they’ll still recruit any interested parties to make offerings in the forest. This will start out with things like food or riches, but they’ll eventually recommend offering animals. From the mods:
“ In the beginning, the minor kills will not capture the attention of the kaiju. The more complex the organism and its capability to feel fear and displeasure, the more likely it has to make an appearance.

If characters stop at wolves and jackals, they have an opportunity for Option 1:
They will see a vague shadow in the fog, which is the kaiju. In light of attempting to summon it, it will cast a mark on the characters involved. This mark will show as a dark bruise somewhere on the body. While this mark is on their bodies, they will be slotted with vivid hallucinations and constant paranoia, as if they are being watched by the kaiju at all hours. Despite this, they will be unable to make out what the kaiju looks like from the distance. ”
Whether it’s hunting animals, making offerings, or just experiencing the negative aftereffects, this is opportunity number one that anyone interested is free to use.

Phase 2 (after Outsiders are kidnapped)
Roughly two days after the Outsiders are kidnapped and the left-behind crew has been getting non-answers, the pair will instead have the idea to kidnap and sacrifice a villager instead. Oops! For those that might have some qualms about that, Tezcatlipoca will explain that he plans to do it as a ritual and that the point isn't actually torture—It's more an attempt to scry the missing Outsiders' location and/or communicate with the Lord of the Forest. They can get the full infodump about human sacrifice in Aztec culture if they're so inclined.

The involved crew will take the kidnapped villager to the forest and other characters will be free to question or interrogate the villager beforehand (though they won’t provide anymore helpful information, alas). This will culminate in Tezcatlipoca doing what he does best and killing the villager by removing their heart. ♥ Anyone involved in this process will be subject to the following:
If they do sacrifice a villager, the kaiju will brainwash the individuals involved. As one of their followers have died, it will demand kin for kin. Those brainwashed will desire to follow the will of the kaiju, and will want to harm other Outsiders. This compulsion will not be constant, but would hit them suddenly in waves. It could even happen hours after the sacrifice. As they have been brainwashed, while they could see the kaiju, they will be unable to remember its appearance no matter how they struggle to make it out. In order to keep the other Outsiders safe, it can be assumed they would need to be bound, etc. You are free to work with this as you deem fit as long as player permissions are received all around!
While Set and Tezcatlipoca are only going to be telling characters they think would be likely to agree to assist, feel free to have a character hear about it from someone else. We still want this one to be as open as possible too.

This is of course another wider plotting opportunity for the naughty souls that decide to get involved. Will they harm another Outsider? Will they need to be restrained? Let’s figure it out!

This is an all-purpose plotting post for anyone interested to further plot about how they might like to get involved and seek out further opportunities/CR with other players, so please use it to find fun opportunities!

Because of the nature of this plot and the associated CWs, we’ve also made a catch-all toplevel relating to it where you can play these things out. You can find that here. Enjoy!

♥, Christy & Pax
